I have to differ - I had a manual Mercedes with the foot operated parking brake but the release was on a hand control. I used it in exactly the same fashion as a hand parking brake. It was a constant source of amusement to watch strangers try and drive it as it usually resulted in a "your clutch is as solid as a rock mate!" from them. One thing I've not seen mentioned in this thread is what I was told was the main reason for not sitting at stop with the foot brake applied (nothing to do with bulbs, most cars have three brake bulbs and the chances of them all failing at the same time is remote and we all check them before every trip don't we?). After pulling up to a stop the disks are nice and hot and sitting with the pads in contact with a part of the disk would cause uneven cooling and increase the possibility of disk warp. I've no idea if it's true or maybe doesn't apply to modern ventilated disks with modern materials but it makes some sense to me. Irrespective of the box for me it's stop, parking brake, neutral and relax. To resume, select gear, check gear and mirrors then parking brake off and pull away for any stop of any more than an anticipated 4 or 5 seconds. I've driven a selection of gearboxes over the years both auto and manual with many years on HGV vehicles, again both auto and manual. On more than one occasion I have selected reverse in error but unless the car behind is literally a couple of centimetres away I've realised long before I've gone that far back. ^ Not sure what year your Freely is but the new ones don't hold on to the gears a little too long, I noticed the torque is stronger lower down on mine maybe because the variable vane geometry has been modified, also there may be a software update available!
