It was a shotgun cartridge, I used to go on rabbit shoots with my late father when I was a young lad. Harvest time was the best, the harvester I remember went around the outside of the fields gradually making its way towards the centre of the field. Around the edge of the field those with guns and dogs waited until the rabbits bolted from the now very decreased crops and headed for other shelter. Seeing the guns go off and the dogs on the retrieve is something I shall never forget, being young to me it was a thrilling sight, long before Myxomatosis hit the country and rabbits did what rabbits do to increase their population.

Living in the countryside I still come across empty cartridges after the pheasant/pigeon and the like shoots.

Being in the possesion of a shotgun cartridge wthout a SGC is not an offence, anyone (over 18 or is 1Cool can legally have in their possesion shotgun cartidges, but you need a SGC to purchase them.
Cartridges do not have to be kept secured, but just "out of sight" of small children.
The only type of cartridge that does not fall into this category is a SLUG (a single or double lead ball) cartridges.

Remember this cartridge was loose wedged under a car seat and should something have hit it it could have caused serious injury. Irrespective of wether you can/are allowed to own a shot gun cartridge the previous owner of the car should have at least checked the number of cartridges first before a shoot, then done a count afterwards including those used.

I supposed if it was wedged in a way that the plastic tubing was compacted as if it was in a barell then the shot might have done damage, obviously wouldn't have been the best of things to happen if it did go off though

I don't count my carts afterwards though, I do make sure all left in my pockets are placed back in to my carrying bag and zipped up Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I understand your concern but you'd have to be extremely unlucky for something to hit it in a way for it to 'explode' i.e. to strike the cap dead centre to fire off the primer.
And to be honest I know of no-one who counts theie cartridges after a shoot to see if they have lost one (after the first few outings), as it does happen that one is dropped from time to time as some cartridge bags when full can allow one to slip out if turned over. and if you have a hundred or so shells in the bag at the time one more or less is not noticed.
