Serves them right, anyone who has the slightest inclination in wanting to visit Scarborough deserves to be held up behind farmers tractors Thumbs Up

I find it's not the caravanner but the the person in front of them that are driving too slow, having been stuck every day to and from town the last three weeks behind little cars doing 35 (or less) whatever the weather or speed limit ........

Quote:
During the holiday season, the route, which has only two dual carriageway sections between Scarborough and York, is often jammed with tractors, vehicles towing caravans, [clapped out 1950's] camper vans, lorries, buses and vintage cars and even old Army vehicles bound for various events,

The council's director of technical services, John Riby, said: "Analysis of congestion along the A64 corridor has, not surprisingly, revealed the influence of the seasonal increase in traffic volumes. The congestion along the route in peak summer times is such that speed limits, on average, are never reached.

"Given the high volumes of caravans on single carriageway stretches of the A64, and the fact that these vehicles are restricted to 50 mph, it is a consequence that trailing vehicles cannot achieve their legal speed limit.

I've highlighted the main offenders for slowing traffic down, (how many if not all of these does CG have on his farm)

Every time I drive that road, i find there is a lack of passing places though, even when towing, you get a slow grandad with his vintage car plodding along way below the speed limit and not a care in the world

The area just after the round about also gets gridlocked due to the 2 lanes into one senario, and traffic trying to turn right across the on coming traffic Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

nothing wrong with caravans, only the idiots that feel as if they need to pass them no matter what.

caravanners are good for this country's economy and keep money in the country instead of it going to the costas, etc

caravanners also tend to be better drivers than the aforementioned idiots, being more aware of what is happening around them, etc

more power to your elbow caravanners ( and motorhomers )

Iain cooper you've stirred up a hornets nest with that comment...

I'll go first...

I'd disagree about caravaners being better drivers, quite often (personal opinion) caravaners only tow once a year and do not understand towing stuff safely because they've never had any tuition, so quite often you get some woefully incapable everyday car towing a van with an equally incapable driver!

Whenever I'm towing I don't end up with huge queues behind me.

That's because your towing with that is on top job.

Why is it when you are towing you get caught by someone who cannot keep a constant speed, who varies between 35mph and 50mph, someone else behind them who whatever speed the first car goes, the second car will not overtake but will be so tight up it's Censored that she cannot see passed the first car, then little Miss Daisy who is happy to join in leaving no space between her and the one in front leaving you having to join them because you need a fair size gap in the oncoming traffic to get your 12 metres pass all three at the same time. I'm a 'vanner' and don't agree 'vanners' are better drivers, I've seen some woefully inadequate ones out on the roads. As for me, well I must admit to being the best driver of all time Wink be it solo or towing. Very rarely these days can you travel at single carriageway speed limits and that is simply due to congestion by the number of vehicles, not by the type of vehicle, unless its a vehicle incapable of more than 30mph, then you get the knock on effect for miles and it never recovers.
Any 'vanner' holding up traffic at less than the speed limit needs to look at the tug or their driving.

Don't forget, vanners are limited to 50 on single carriageway roads as are a lot of HGVs, the tailbacks then are caused by legislation

I disagree, in the summer it's very hard to find an "A" that ends in a coastal town with enough space to even hit the legal limit, it's down to vehicle numbers and not vehicle type or vehicle legislation, unless as I said it's a vehicle incapable of more than 30mph.
If that was the case, and 'vanners' are to blame then I should never see a vehicle in front of me, but I get held up by all types from cars, laden lorries, bicycles to tractors.
We must accept it the way it is, our roads are overcrowded, inadequate and we must live with it.

Good point on the people who don't keep a steady speed and slow down excessively as the slightest bend/curve in the road. I also beleive it's down to too many ditherers, either not being assertive enough at give way junctions/roundabouts etc. and people not being ready to move on as SOON as the traffic signal turns to green then it takes them a mile to get up to 30mph.

how many times have you played leap frog, towing or not, with a often overloaded ford fiesta sized car that when overtaken at your steady speed, only for them to over take you shortly after and then slow down again Evil or Very Mad Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis
