Started the car from cold this morning and engine indicator illuminated followed by "Reduced Engine Performance".
LR Assist called - and awaiting Technician.

The handbook is a little sketchy at best about this - anyone know if this is a terminal engine failure?
Only just passed 1000 miles - oil consumption has been fine - so absolutely gutted

Called LPR Service Desk too - very helpful, but no suggestions other than to await LR Assist....

This happened to Laydship's MY2010 FL2 TD4-e Manual at approximately 14,000kms.

LR Dealer first dealt with it by cleaning the DPF although there were none of the two DPF error messages listed. Needless to say cleaning the DPèF did not solve the problem.

The Dealer contacted LR Switzerland who advised a software update. That was done, but since them we've experienced a number of irritating faults like AFS failure, door mirrors no longer closing on one press of lock on remote key fob, and HDC activating itself. Had hoped they'd all be fixed and explained last Thursday on its first annual service. They were not.

No further problems with REP alarm - or maybe there is: FL2 almost stalled 4 times om the way back from the "service" - and vehicle is less economic than before - and it's sluggish from the off.........

It can be caused be loads of things, but a fault code should be logged to tell them what it is

It may clear after a rest period by it self or need a reset Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

OK so after spending some considerable time with LR Assistance today - here's what we know.

We believe the car tried to go through DPF regeneration on Saturday (very bad smell coming from rear ns). Car driven about 40 miles on Sun and 100 miles yesterday stop/start traffic. Started car this morning and Engine Indicator (Reduced Engine Performance on instrument panel).

LR Assist Tech plugged in laptop and read fault codes from ECU - which recorded fault P244A-96 PCM at 1057 miles. DPF differential pressure too low. Bank 1. SDD recommended 'forced' DPF regeneration - so we went for a 20 mile drive (above 25MPH) with laptop connected.

Engine indicator did not reset after drive and manual intervention with SDD was required to 'force' reset of fault-code after DPF regeneration.

LR Assist arranged visit to local Lookers (Stortford - sorry James ) where fault was no longer being recorded. Short call to JLR by LR Assist and dealer technician reveals this is fixed in latest software update (only just issued Sat 13/11/10).

Apparently this is a known problem by JLR and early 2011MY FL2s have a 'restrictor' to stop P244A-96 being logged. However, restrictor was not in place on my vehicle and software update is required. The LR Assist guy had a bunch of VINs where the 'restrictor' is in place and apparently Dealer network is to remove 'restrictor' and update software - during first service/or failure - which ever occurs soonest

Car booked back-in to Lookers Stortford on Friday to get the update - hopefully no further DPF failures between now and then.

Car can be driven (although ECU puts car into 'limp' mode) - but restricted power - feels like Turbo failure......

Great support from LR Assist so far - excellent Technician (Jim Warner).

I'll post results of the software update on Friday....

I had Jim Warner come out to my "transmission fault traction reduced" fault. He was, as you said, excellent.

One of the good things of having a 2010 over a 2011 no DPF!! I'm also possibly popping to stortford on Friday to have my seatbelt holders replaced! Very impressed with the dealership!

Had a similar problem this year, which resulted recently in a new DPF being fitted under warrenty.
Advice to those that get the choice - Keep well away from DPF's if you can  2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.
Stornoway Grey with Ebony Black Pleather, Clear Indicators, Body Side Mouldings etc.

So far LR Assist has been excellent - hoping the software upgrade fixes the problem and that the fault doesn't recur.

There is no point at all to have a DPF if you can avoid it - For one it reduces the BHP of the Freely from 160 to 152, and apparantly the LR one has problems.

In Norway we pay lower road tax with a DPF fitted, but in the long term it will probably cost more for the problems it causes.

I wonder if any one can come up with one good reason to have a DPF, it would be very intresting to know what  2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

Apart from disband the EU then you're stuck with them. THey are fitted to comply with soot emission regulations. Unfortunately it seems the regs were introduced too early which didn't allow enough time for OEMS to fully develop the system Originally they used a dosing system which didn't work, now they inject directly. You ought to see the Consumer Action Group forums to see the grief people have with them acros a multitude or manufactuers.

Had a DPF on my BMW E91 325d - never had a problem 90K miles - not one warranty issue....

DervFan: that was on a BMW, we are now talking LR language and you will have warranty issues  2007 Freelander 2 HSE TD4 Manual with Premium Pack & Moonroof.

Our MY2010 has DPF.

Most European Freelander 2 have DPF since somewhere in 2007.
UK Freelander 2 have DPF since my2011.

In the German board www.blacklandy.de you can read a lot about problems with the DPF.
Seems like the manual gearbox versions have much more problems with DPF then the auto gearbox versions...
