Sorry I meant a grey area in the fact that although illegal, they will still pass an MOT if the light pattern is within acceptable limits.

but an MOT pass does not mean the vehicle is legal. The police?VOSA can still fine you for having them fitted regardless of whether you have an MOT or not. You may also face other implications if you are involved in an accident regarding visibility.

Personally I wouldn't be bothered with all the potential hassle and just use decent bulbs like Carnoch said.

Not having a go at anyone just making sure that people are aware of the issues before fitting.

To be fair though, how many police would actually look/know about this unless there was a specific crackdown on these type of lights ?

I had mine in 5 years without a single issue.

I did try the Phillips bulbs at 1st, but to be honest, these are around £20 more & 1000X better.

I suppose it's upto the guys modifying the vehicles if they want to take the "risk", but as you say, as long as they know all the facts then it's upto them

I accept the arguement about HID v. H7 extreme, yes there are rules and regs surrounding Xenons.

That said, it is beyond all but the most avid Traffic Filth on the go. It's all under the Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989 as amended and the RTA 1988 as amended. Note - Regulations are not an offence, therefore they have to revert to an Act to make it illegal. Anyway, like Tachos, Construction and Use, etc Filth avoid it like a dose of the clap - far too complicated.

Not enough to put me off getting HIDs...

And on full beam, but remember I've got the Angel Eyes Xenon's, the proper LR factory ones, they are my dip lights, so all you'd see is the difference between them, the Xenons and normal type bulbs operating full beam, again Philips Extreme.

Worth pointing out as I was totally ignorant, if you get Xenons on a new car, it's only the dip beam they work on. The side lights and full beam are halogen, hence there is a difference in the light that show, which if your a perfectionist, you want to get rid of - i.e. Philips Extreme.

The D3 has got both bi-xenon and halogen headlights, a halogen bulb is used for the "in-fill"  ______________________

H7's used for high beam on a Xenon Disco, at least on the non adaptive ones and I don't see why they would be any different on the adaptive. Next time you pass one, take a look. In ignorance, I did think every bulb would Xenon, not just the dip, but then I wasn't clued up on it.

Don't have to pass one, there's one sat on my drive they are adaptive headlights, low & high beam is Xenon with halogen "in-fill" on high beam. ______________________

Hi Dave, maybe I am getting confused with my Xenons, I am not sure. It's genuine LR, non adaptive. Anyway, it's bright. I presume your side lights are yellow halogens?

Unfortunately yes they are , might look into changing them for LED ones. ______________________
