Just a quick pointer: When I come to junctions the idle RPM on mine initially hangs at about 1000 rpm then slowly drops to normal idle speed of about 750. I assume there must be some form of "throttle damper" built in to the ECU software. It looks to me those with trouble as per this thread have a motor that is missing this feature. 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

My previous car (a Jag) did this after an ECU update. It was explained as something to prevent it stalling from a standing start. It made it easier to start off without using the accelerator when in town traffic too.

The MAF sensor is in the air intake hose to the left of the air filter. Two Torx screws hold it in. I posted a sequence on cleaning it, but BE CAREFUL if you attemp it, the wires inside are VERY delicate. I can't see how that would affect the idling much though. Maybe a crank position sensor? Poke it, Poke it, make it do it again!!

Turning up the idle speed above what it should be to correct a fault is not really the way to cure the problem.
Years ago we had a Montego Turbo that kept stalling at junctions and they kept turning up the idle speed a little each time it went back in to cure it, in the end it was doing 3000rpm, that cured the problem but every time you started off there were two black lines up the road. The problem was eventually traced to a faulty throttle servo motor.
Another thing that can do it this weather if the car is not reaching full operating temperature for long enough and this causes oil emulsion, white sludge, that blocks up the engine breather hoses causing back pressure in the crankcase, also causes oil leaks too.
