2007 Freelander 2 TD4 XS Manual Zermatt Silver
Fitting Larger Tyres onto Freelander 2 XS with HST bodykit

Hello Folks,

I purchased the above car a couple of weeks ago with 19" shadow chrome alloys. The tyres are X continental 235/55/R19 V. I would like to put a wider tyre on, possible a 255/55/R19 (same as Disco 3 ). Does anyone know if this is possible? Is there enough room between suspension strutt and tyre? Will i need a wheel spacer?

Cheers

Be careful fitting non-standard tyres and spacers, you'll almost certainly void your warranty on certain items (e.g. suspension, wheel bearings, etc) and you'll need to tell your insurance company.

The Fl2 wasn't designed for the wider tyres, why do you need to put them on?

Thanks for the replies folks but putting aside the fact that a few forum members don't exactly agree with my decision, nobody has actually answered the original question!! Confused ...........Is it possible to actually fit the bigger tyre and still drive the car unhindered?

duckworths show a pic of an fl2 with the larger wheels so I guess the answer is yes, the spacers are from a german firm matzker http://www.matzker.de/index.php?cPath=30_37

It's not a common thing to do, which is why no-one knows - bear with us!

A few other things to consider:

  • Are the wheels themselves are wide enough to take the 255 tyres
  • One way to find out if you'd have enough room is to get under the car and have a look at the current clearances.
  • Bear in mind that 255/55 tyres have a physically larger diameter than 235/55

For the best advice, contact AJS Tyres, they are a sponsor of our sister site DISCO3 - see www.ajstyres.co.uk and give Andy a ring.

Have a look here. Someone has put 255 tyres on the FL2 19" rims.

If you do decide to put wider tyres on the wheels you have, I'd be more than interested in buying your old 235s off you if you want. Let me know. 09MY FL2 Td4 XS, Style Pack, Privacy Glass, Martinique Blue.. oh so very blue..

Hi, I have now found this site that has a tyre size calculator, http://www.tyresave.co.uk/tyresize.html You will see that you can now move up to a 255x50x19 and this has only a very slight size increase of 3mm in the tyre height, this won't affect the running of the car.

I would not do it, there is no advantage in doing so. Like others, I am just interested to know why you would want to do this.

The drive will be terrible, it will be slower and the handling will go through the window. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Yet another modification cynic.................the reason would be purely aesthetic as the idea would be to make the car look more aggresive. Several companies have been spoken to and this is possible WITHOUT all the problems you mention.....................

I'm sure the companies might be correct in what they say, but bear in mind they want your money so will (in my opinion) say what you want to hear Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis
