Rear wheel bearing replacement, messed up !

Hi,

Just replaced the NSR wheel bearing.

Decided to do it on car without taking the knuckle off. Watched vids etc

All went surprisingly well, hub off old bearing out, new bearing pushed in, then problems, pushed hub in and it destroyed the bearing, hub a sloppy mess, so it’s all out waiting bits to try again.

I thought I did it right, support inner race and push bearing in.

Either I got it wrong and didn’t,t support rear inner race correctly or pushed it in too hard ?

Could someone confirm that when pushing hub in you support just the inner race with suitable plate at the rear and then have another plate behind this resting at back of knuckle larger than bearing hole, then you push in hub with the inner race supported and rear plate stops and movement forwards / backwards from the back.

Did it with just inner race supported but failed as I think it needs the above set up to stop it moving

Anyone got any pictures of setting up, tried watching you tube vids etc but still don’t see how it should be set up

Thanks

I suggest you take the knuckle off and use a press, that's what I did initially but then with the later replacements found a local garage to push the old ones out and new ones in for £25, I supplied the bearings.

Stripped mine down myself, local tractor garage pressed new bearing in for free. I understand how it can be done in situ, but after reading other people's experiences, why would you?

Hi,

Plan A is to give it another go in-situ if I can get the right process for rear bearing support when pushing in.

If that fails I will go to Plan B and remove knuckle

People do it on vehicle and felt I was close to getting it sorted.

How far is hub pressed in ? Gave mine a very good push in and wonder if I overdid it 🙁

I got a local garage to replace my FNS wheel bearing.
All I can tell you is that the chap said it took a lot of force to press the bearings in and out - more than he expected. Jules

I agree with I Like Chips & Grimdog……better to remove knuckle…..& use press….you can see what’s happening & you have to remove driveshaft if you do in-situ……
I haven’t done any of my w/brgs yet but I did n/s/r on a customer’s ’just out of warranty’ 2013FL…..dealer wanted £450 to replace….!
Pretty sure I did same as on Richard’s video…..press brg in knuckle…..then knuckle onto hub via inner race…….important……..problem arises because hub-bearing is actually 2 opposing ball-brgs…..forcing the hub into outer brg can act on inner brg separating it…………..as you know Bigbangman……!
Doing the job by the video you will know when brg is fully home……..it won’t go any more.
Ref: Jules……………..I took a tiny bit of rust /metal off hub & knuckle with sander……went back nice & easily.

Best of luck……Pete. FL2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto MY 2012— current
