You cant change all the ATF in one cycle of drain and fill. The gearbox holds 7L of ATF and only drains approx 3L - the rest is retained (57% of the ATF) within the gearbox and torque converter.

I think there are two different specs of fluid depending whether the FL2 is pre and post facelift ( approx. 2011 change )

Thanks. And no difference in this respect between the early and late gearbox (apart from the ATF)?

Assumiing your gearbox is already at the correct level and at the right temperature then you replace what you drain out - about 3L to 3.5L Jules Last edited by jules on 16th Jan 2025 11:22 pm. Edited 1 time in total |

Thanks again, jules. I’d got distracted by your additional comments about multiple drain and refills - apologies.

And a related question - the LR manual says that to check the fluid level you add half a litre of fluid, get the fluid to the right temperature, cycle through the gears and then, with the engine idling, remove the filler level plug and “a small amount of fluid should drip out of the level plug”.

The level test should only be done with the fluid at 60c and the engine running so how would you know if the level was correct before you did the test.

Thanks again. The methodology is clear enough even if the description in the manual isn't quite accurate. |

I guess your next question will be - how do you know when the ATF is at 60C. |
