Limp Mode and EGR error code

Hi everyone any ideals on this.
The other day (-4c and going up long hill) the car went into limpmode and showed a "reduced engine performance" message but no engine malfunction (CEL) light came on. After restating engine, message went off and car performed as normal, then after a few miles did the exact same agian. This time after restarting the CEL light came on and went into limp mode.
Checked for codes when i got home and found it had logged a P0406 code (egr). After clearing the code the car drives normal for a bit then the CEL light comes but does not always go limp mode, P0406 code again.
Don't know if this is related but 18 months ago i changed the throttle valve as it had stuck shut, but i did'nt do an air path calibration. So could it be that throttle valve is now faulty (due to not being calibrated) and this causing the egr to try to do things it can't do? Have since done a air path calibration but still no better.
Even more odd, now the weather has warmed up a bit its not done it for a couple of days now.
