Glow plugs short life

The cold starting gradually got worse from last Winter. Just replaced them

All four of them were reading OL on the Multimeter, Britpart done 1,300 miles or less

Well if you got 1300miles out of Britpart ones you did well. I would not even buy a toilet roll from Britpart 2013 FL2 XS.

Jules Yes they were the 5v ones correct for my MY

Rommel I know, I know. If memory serves bit of a rush job. I bought them locally from a factors, they had them on the shelf. I remember asking at the time of purchase if they had other makes

" No sir these are used by all the local garages, we have had no comebacks "

As I say since the beginning of the cold starting problem was first noticed last year so the best of the four lasted 1300 miles.

Did mine at around 150k when I bought the car. All 4 were dead. I have changed the starter, I have the extra earth lead, new AGM battery etc, but it's still sluggish in the -4 mornings of late. The 2.2 x type I have cranks and starts the same in mild or cold weather. It seems from the numerous posts on this subject it's just a trait of (some) of our cars.

I am on 157000 mls still on original glow plugs……..Bosch or NGK I presume…….
—————————————————————————————————————————

Engine starts straight away even during recent very cold (-9) spell. Must have a good one…

Only problem I had before Christmas was battery drain after 4 days standing……I measured 900mA drain

…..looked on forum….several contributors suggested turning off auto lights/wipers & double locking..

Did that…..ok since…even after 14 days over Christmas…….! As Grimdog says…..just a trait (or traits) of

Some of our cars……! FL2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto MY 2012— current

Oxon Pete, every time I come home I switch everything off. Lights, radio, heater etc. Do this from when I had a problem with a Disco 1 many years ago. Just became a habit. Minimise any battery drain till up and running. Jim A

Jules,
66k mls , you shouldn’t have a problem for years, relax 😌
Just hope g/plugs last as long as the ones in my previous, D2 TD5…..470k mls in 15years…5 cylinders 4 glow plugs, never changed ……quality…..fantastic motor, shame chassis rotted away.

Jim À,
Your procedure works, why I don’t know, obviously control units can still work when key removed, using juice. First had problem last year after not using car for a few days, non starting especially after damp weather. Since the battery was 5 years old I replaced it, even though it checked out ok. All ok for about ten days then seemed same trouble…..after a lot of checking I found it was the starter motor….bad contacts….had same with Disco. They are “quirky” cars…..!!!! Funny you have had the same cars as me…..
As several contributors have said “ what can I replace FL2 with ? “ While it keeps running well I’ll keep it. FL2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto MY 2012— current

Oxon Pete, loved my zDisco,s. Both auto. D1 was a jap reimport. All singing and dancing.
D2 was not top spec. Always fancied an FL2 and changed 4 years ago. As now 83 the FL2 probably my last car. 133 k miles, excellent order. MOT due March, should be ok. Just waiting to see what Starmer/Reeves do in April and insurance. Beautiful car to drive. Do you go through proper start procedure every time? Jim A

Jim A,

To start I normally just get in, foot on brake & press starter…….but if , like today 1 deg only I switch on & let h/plugs warm-up for 10 seconds or so. Clever the way the electronics keeps the starter working until it starts……
Loved my D2TD5 as well…..hundreds of hours behind the wheel….wanted to keep forever but with chassis rot & problem with leaking sunroof it had to go……..but I wanted to do 1/2 million miles….never did.
In fairness the FL is better……if a bit smaller….. very comfy seats with the HSE……had very little trouble…à bit last year in France with turbo hose & sensor….headache at time but ok now. Have had hesitation / stuttering problems for 5 yrs or more………only when ambient temperature is over 20 degrees…….a common problem that no one has solved……see my & other posts……….I’m waiting to see what happens in the summer this year……no problem at moment…..
Don’t mention Reeves/Starmer…… Censored !!!!! No politics on forum…… !

Just a driver,

Exactly right……!!
Since FL2 is 12yrs old I thought of replacing it with DS….but why pay £650 R/Tax just to update…& unless you buy new what about all the problems with Ingenium…… ?

I known I just said “No politics on forum” but what a Banging Head government !
