Haldex service..Yes/No?

I have a '61 sd4 at 130k miles with FSH. I've read plenty of info how to service the Haldex and recommendations to do so, although not included in LR schedule. Conversely I've noted that some garages don't touch it and others don't recommend it, suggesting that it can raise other problems.
My question is: Are there any owners out there completing say 200k miles without ever touching the Haldex? Secondly, what's the worst can happen if left alone but the vehicle otherwise fully serviced to schedule?

I believe the worst that can happen is having purchase and fit a new Haldex.

I have driven 2 FL2 SD4s for a combined 165K miles over 12+ years, my only major failure (so far - touch wood) has been a Rear Differential.

My cars have only had the recommended LR Services, nothing more, bar consumables, brakes, etc.

I have taken the 'insurance' against large bills with an extended warranty (includes labour, parts, hire vehicles, breakdown recovery, etc)

I would take the risk of Haldex or other major item by following LR recommendations, BUT remember to save your (extra unused) servicing costs against eventual replacement.

PS I know that other Brands have different schedules! FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 79k+ miles) (MY2015)
Metro in its 11th Year of (Extended) LR Warranty / Full LR Service History
(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

I would do it, its not worth taking the risk of having to replace the Haldex for the sake of a 100 quids worth of parts. 2013 FL2 XS.

I don't think mine had reached the worst it could ever get but mine became very noisey.

I bought a recon with heavier duty bearings from a seller on ebay. ( https://www.wearediffs.com/ )
The warranty with meant it needed to be fitted by a reputable garage.
And it was an exchange unit.

That was at about 85k

Yes, I alluded to already having basic info on haldex service, but my question is should it be done or left well alone?
I’m seeking opinions on users who have NOT had it done.

From what I read on this forum, major transmission items start to go wrong between 80k-120k miles if you follow the bare LR Servicing Schedule.

Unlike Electronic Items that seem to fail very early or not at all, mechanical items wear out gradually as time goes on.

As you have already covered 130k with no problem, then not much can be gained, as far as wear goes, by general servicing, but mechanical assemblies will always appreciate the filters being cleaned, fresh undamaged oil, and a bit of adjustment.

I think it is a matter of cost --- of my manhours and parts, in either repeatedly servicing it, or just waiting for it to fail and be replaced. --- its a personal choice.

That is unless there is a danger to life in ignoring it. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

You've done well getting to 130k without servicing the haldex. Give it an oil and filter change, it's well overdue. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

As has been already suggested, at the very least it needs an oil & filter change.

It is also prudent to remove the pump to clean the filter screen on that as well.

The fact that Volvo, VAG, have service intervals for their Haldex installations must also count for something, surely?

I would not recommend dismantling the unit itself, as that is beyond the average home mechanic & the majority of professional ones as well IMHO.

I’m sure if you start a poll re your question, the majority would vote “Yes”. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.

Ian, I have 145k miles on my i6 (which as we all know is the most reliable version of the FL2 Confused ) and not had the Haldex serviced. Neither have I had any driveline failures.

There, now I've jinxed it, haven't I? Tim

Paul4751& contributors to thread ,

Ok, I own up…my FL2 SD4HSE 2012….. 157k miles….with very few problems has never been touched ref Haldex
or Aisin transmission for that matter………glad I got that off my chest….!

Seriously, despite being a LR enthusiast…..learnt to drive in a Series 2A diesel (non synchro 1-2) I had heard of an Haldex but didn’t know what it did until I looked on several LR forums because I had (past tense I hope) a problem which I couldn’t understand……the car hesitated/ stuttered when accelerating from à start….ok on full throttle…but normal driving ……but this only happened when the ambient temperature was above 20deg………….I have done lots of posts on here…..as have others…..
Now in cold Oxfordshire since mid November ….no problems.

To get back on topic : I saw lots of posts about this Haldex thing……….being retired garagist for trucks I was interested so researched the Haldex Drive….how it works….what goes wrong……….
The Haldex on our FL works as it should…….I hope I haven’t done as trw999 wrote “jinxed it”
I can’t understand….if the oil/filter changes are so important why isn’t this in the LR Service Schedule.
Also why is it necessary to remove the unit…….the filter & drain should be easy to do……ditto the transmission…..on the RR BorgWarner auto you could remove to sump, clean out , refit, refill with oil, without having to part-flush…………..
The thing about the Haldex unit is……apparently it’s “free-wheeling “ over 20mph except when drive is “ commanded “, so if you do a lot of off-roading /city traffic work it’s working more than mine, which does mainly long distance motorway miles…or it stands still, so it shouldn’t be hardly ever under load.
That’s my theory……..so I’ll see how it goes…….does this make sense ?
All I can say is : having looked at the various posts ( and participated)….subjects : cost of ownership …long term..my FL has been very trouble-free by comparison…..is it me, my driving, maintenance or am I just lucky at the moment…..?
Will see how it goes……..
Comments welcome…

Haldex 3 and 4 have different operating conditions and importantly Gen 4 has an electric pump.

It would be interesting to see if Gen 3 and 4 have different failure rates?

Because LR conveniently didn't bother fitting a drain plug to the haldex, rear diff or front ptu in order to save a few pence and you can't get the haldex pump out of the unit with the propshaft drive flange in the way! Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948
