I believe the worst that can happen is having purchase and fit a new Haldex.

I would do it, its not worth taking the risk of having to replace the Haldex for the sake of a 100 quids worth of parts. 2013 FL2 XS.

Yes, I alluded to already having basic info on haldex service, but my question is should it be done or left well alone? I’m seeking opinions on users who have NOT had it done. |

From what I read on this forum, major transmission items start to go wrong between 80k-120k miles if you follow the bare LR Servicing Schedule.

You've done well getting to 130k without servicing the haldex. Give it an oil and filter change, it's well overdue. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

As has been already suggested, at the very least it needs an oil & filter change.

Ian, I have 145k miles on my i6 (which as we all know is the most reliable version of the FL2 ) and not had the Haldex serviced. Neither have I had any driveline failures.

Paul4751& contributors to thread , Ok, I own up…my FL2 SD4HSE 2012….. 157k miles….with very few problems has never been touched ref Haldex or Aisin transmission for that matter………glad I got that off my chest….! Seriously, despite being a LR enthusiast…..learnt to drive in a Series 2A diesel (non synchro 1-2) I had heard of an Haldex but didn’t know what it did until I looked on several LR forums because I had (past tense I hope) a problem which I couldn’t understand……the car hesitated/ stuttered when accelerating from à start….ok on full throttle…but normal driving ……but this only happened when the ambient temperature was above 20deg………….I have done lots of posts on here…..as have others….. Now in cold Oxfordshire since mid November ….no problems. To get back on topic : I saw lots of posts about this Haldex thing……….being retired garagist for trucks I was interested so researched the Haldex Drive….how it works….what goes wrong………. The Haldex on our FL works as it should…….I hope I haven’t done as trw999 wrote “jinxed it” I can’t understand….if the oil/filter changes are so important why isn’t this in the LR Service Schedule. Also why is it necessary to remove the unit…….the filter & drain should be easy to do……ditto the transmission…..on the RR BorgWarner auto you could remove to sump, clean out , refit, refill with oil, without having to part-flush………….. The thing about the Haldex unit is……apparently it’s “free-wheeling “ over 20mph except when drive is “ commanded “, so if you do a lot of off-roading /city traffic work it’s working more than mine, which does mainly long distance motorway miles…or it stands still, so it shouldn’t be hardly ever under load. That’s my theory……..so I’ll see how it goes…….does this make sense ? All I can say is : having looked at the various posts ( and participated)….subjects : cost of ownership …long term..my FL has been very trouble-free by comparison…..is it me, my driving, maintenance or am I just lucky at the moment…..? Will see how it goes…….. Comments welcome… |

Haldex 3 and 4 have different operating conditions and importantly Gen 4 has an electric pump.

Because LR conveniently didn't bother fitting a drain plug to the haldex, rear diff or front ptu in order to save a few pence and you can't get the haldex pump out of the unit with the propshaft drive flange in the way!
