Drivetrain PTU issues?

Hi all, not long picked up an early Freelander 2, was driving fine until I pulled away from an uneven bank on a country lane, heard a bang and from then when driving it felt like the clutch was slipping and it was losing drive.

From the the outside when moving the car backwards and forwards, others clonking from the rear and you can see the rear wheel skipping. We thought to narrow it down we'd pull the haldex fuse so it reverts to front wheel drive, but without the fuse there is no drive at all, you can literally put it in gear, release the clutch and absolutely nothing happens.

Has anyone had this before?

Thanks in advance

Sound as if you’ve suffered failure of the splines between the gearbox and PTU.

Would that not stop drive to the rear wheels though?

You’re correct. So has a front driveshaft or CV joint failed and because there is no load on one side the front diff is sending all the power there and nothing to the wheel that is still connected? You’re going to have to look at the front drive train.

That’s a good point, I’d better get the tools out 😂

Agree with above. You've lost drive to a front wheel somewhere - so the broken connection is just spinning off the torque. The electronics think you've lost grip at the front front tyres so engages the haldex to drive the rear diff.

This has been been posted on here once before - long time ago - the owner was able to "drift" his FL2 as it was RWD only. Jules
