Vibrating New Aux Tensioner.

Hello everyone,

New here so be gentle lol.

I have a 2010 FL2 with 155k on the clock, all was fine until an annoying vibration sound came from under the bonnet, at first I thought it was something plastic that had come loose but then I noticed the Aux belt tensioner was rapidly vibrating . Once removed it was obvious that the tension spring had snapped inside. Brilliant I thought found the problem. I ordered and fitted a new tensioner and aux belt , fired her up and all was ok for a day, fired her the next morning and the noise was back. I thought new tensioner had broke its spring but upon inspection all was found to be all good. Re fitted everything , fired it up all was ok for about a minute then the noise was back then the noise would briefly go quiet then come back , now its continuous at low RPM , the noise fades and disappears as the revs increase as does the vibration from the new tensioner . I know concede defeat , all the other pulleys seem serviceable by hand but unable to test them with the new belt fitted and under load. Any ideas as to what might cause this would be greatly received and save my sanity. I am ex REME so have some mechanical experience with Land Rover.

The clutch on the alternator pulley has siezed. Take the belt off. You should be able to turn the alternator one way only. Turn it the other way and the pulley will 'slip'. If you can turn it both ways, you need a new pulley. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

This link includes a good video of fan belt vibration. Most of the rest of it is about other noises/vibrations associated with the FL2.

Seizing of the Alternator Pulley seems to be a common problem.

It’s not just FL2's that have that problem. Any motor with a serpentine belt and a spring loaded tensioner is susceptible to the alternator clutch/pulley seizing. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Jules I think you are right to blame the Alternator Pulley Clutch as the belt should be free of Alternator torque as the RPM drops.

Quote from Quora link below---
Overrun pulleys put less strain on the belt and internals of the alternator, as an example, when an engine runs at 4000 rpm and the throttle is closed and the engine’s rpm comes down then the overrun pulley will allow the alternator to coast down instead of being forced to slow down, with a solid pulley the alternator is braked via the belt, this makes the whole engine and charging system smoother and more economical. sort of the alternator does not brake the engine and the engine does not brake the alternator. Just imagine how many times the alternator spins up and down during a journey, especially in traffic, the rpm is constantly varying, with an overrun pulley only the increase of the engine’s rpm puts strain on the alternator and its drive system and not the decrease of engine rpm as well as in solid pulleys.

Isn’t it nice when people return to the thread and let those that have helped know what the result was as well as those that may search for the same problem at a later date. Rolling Eyes Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Hello again everyone,

Sorry for the late reply still recovering from a heart attack I have to take things easier these days.

I still do my own spanner work as and when I can and I can confirm Steve D and everyone else that said the problem was the alternator clutch was the problem were 100% correct. What a palaver getting the alternator off though, not like the old days ten minutes . Anyway finally removed it and I just changed the faulty pulley, that was a piece of cake. I also had to change the tensioner and snake belt. Once everything was put back in its rightful place and final checks made it was fired up and I can honestly say it runs perfectly. So a massive thank you all for your time ,effort and diagnostic brilliance . Once again very sorry for the delay totally unintentional .
