The clutch on the alternator pulley has siezed. Take the belt off. You should be able to turn the alternator one way only. Turn it the other way and the pulley will 'slip'. If you can turn it both ways, you need a new pulley. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

please follow this though - mine has a odd noise as the engine slows down - wondering if its alternator of AC pulleys Jules |

It’s not just FL2's that have that problem. Any motor with a serpentine belt and a spring loaded tensioner is susceptible to the alternator clutch/pulley seizing. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Jules I think you are right to blame the Alternator Pulley Clutch as the belt should be free of Alternator torque as the RPM drops. Quote from Quora link below--- Overrun pulleys put less strain on the belt and internals of the alternator, as an example,when an engine runs at 4000 rpm and the throttle is closed and the engine’s rpm comes down then the overrun pulley will allow the alternator to coast down instead of being forced to slow down, with a solid pulley the alternator is braked via the belt, this makes the whole engine and charging system smoother and more economical. sort of the alternator does not brake the engine and the engine does not brake the alternator.
