I was watching a bit of "Bangers and Cash"
They were taking a Sunbeam Rapier away from an old chap who had loved it for years and years. He was trying to show them the wad of service sheets he had retained.
But the chaps weren't really interested said "service history counts for nowt" and saying in as many words that selling at auction is all about how it drives and how it looks.

Personally, as a buyer I would would be happy if a potential purchase came with a wad of receipts backing up the history. I keep all paperwork for our cars.

I remember a line from old old Top Gear when Quentin Willson says "only dorks by BMW's without a full service history"

At the time my dad was an AA patrol who attended a broken down 325 that the owner had not long bought, my dad casually asked if it had come with any history (having seen that same episode of TG) it didn't and unfortunately the head gasket had gone and the engine was well and truly cooked...

Probably why it's important to me...

I had that sort of thing when I sold on my CRV with a stack of service receipts for parts. I was told by the dealer "I will look at them if I have time".

I was a bit taken aback when he told me he would pay me when he sold the car. That's how the second hand dealership works mostly they don't actually own the cars for sale as such.

Thinking back to when I bought my current FL2, the garage wanted evidence of SH as part of the agreed part ex deal and when I handed over the book pack and pile of receipts the sales guy was pretty impressed and certainly didn't quibble over the price offered...

These days though, even a stamp in the book is becoming a thing of the past as it's all on line. Part of the service history on my FL2 is on the LR online service history site, although the actual services were carried out by an indipendant garage at the time.

All the maintenance I've done to my Freelander is handwritten in the back pages of my Haynes manual, every oil change, brake pads, haldex service, timing belt etc.
If I remember I keep the invoices for the parts.
My last Discovery 2 I sold with the same evidence of service history and the private buyer was delighted.
I tend to hold onto my cars for a long time so when I come to sell it on a FSH is not as expected as say a 3 year old car would be but it's certainly great to have it. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

I looked at many FL2 and with all the valuable info in the search of this forum. Especially the 10Y services etc I wanted proof these were done, many were not done, so was able to negotiate a big discount with private buyers. As deep down they knew you had them by the curlies!

Especially now with DPF's and C1 oil etc you need to know the right oil and correct yearly service routine has been carried out in the past.

I bought my 2010 HSE auto with 115 k miles. Main reason was large folder of invoices and servicing done.
I have a spread sheet with all costs detailed. Including insurance, mot, road tax.
All invoices are in a folder also.
Now 129 k and going like a dream. I had the auto box fully flushed about a month ago.
Just drove over 300 miles in last 2 days. Absolutely perfect.
Just remember not to let wife see spreadsheet. Jim A

Obviously selling auction is different to normal selling.

I glad keeping a service history is felt to be worthwhile.

I`m in the more evidence is better group! I however have sold a few vehicles to We Buy Any Car recently and there is very little difference in the price offered for a car with incomplete or missing service history to a vehicle with a complete and comprehensive history!

To be honest as they can pretty much forge anything now days how do you know a book full of stamps is genuine or not. Think like everything it has to be taken with a pinch of salt.

Thinking of getting a stamp made up for service books (not that LR have them now)
