Hi,

My 2009 could do with some replacement bonnet struts - there’s only so many times you can allow it to drop on your head whilst working in the engine bay!

Has anyone had any experience (good or bad) with the aftermarket struts sold on the likes of eBay? Have they lasted well or are they needing replacement again within 6 months?

I would be interested too I’ve been bonked in the head by my bonnet it hurts a lot.

Brother bought some off Ebay for £12. Seem to be OK - for now, and he's had them fitted for about 15 months.
I bought a "genuine" Land Rover set but on opening the package noticed they didn't have the Land Rover logo on them. So although I paid Land Rover prices, I could've gotten the same cheapo ones my brother did. Nothing on them to tell who made them or even if they are genuine or OEM .
Could've saved a fair amount just buying these instead.

I bought some from SGS engineering and am very happy with them. I purchased boot struts at the same time and found them to be a very helpful and professional company to deal with.

Have bought from SGS for previous car. But this time bought some cheap ones in Australia for the boot.

Seem to be a few mm too long so had to ratchet them in a bit. Other than that so far no issues. Were installed in May 2023. Was getting sick & tired of using a short adjustable painters pole.



Was going to get a pair for the bonnet, but so far the bonnet stays up, even with the extra acoustic insulation. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I bought some FeBi Bilstein struts for my tailgate a year ago, and they're still as strong as ever even after a year of Australian sun. They weren't expensive then but shipping from Amazon Germany was, and I justified it as an experiment in importing - and being able to tell my mates I fitted Bilsteins to the Land Rover.

I'm expecting 10 years use from them.

Bought a pair of Land Rover Freelander 2 Bonnet Gas Struts STABILUS 2x LR001773G off eBay in November 2021 - working perfectly.

£32 at the time. 2007 TD4 HSE

So have replaced front and rear. All working fine.

Thanks for the replies. I've gone with the set from JGS4x4 for now - at that price they don't have to last forever!

I've had aftermarket struts on hood and tailgate (bonnet and boot) for years now, they work fine. Don't recall the brand.

Must be the time of year , bought mine from JGS4x4 , time will tell but sensible price so we shall see.
Should have bought the tailgate set at the same , they're getting a little sluggish. A little electrician screwdriver is the tool of choice to free the existing ones.

Just changed my tail gate struts original from 2007 so lasted quite a while went for these below.

Used a line prop to hold gate up while changing them over.

For the engine compartment hatch I used the Stabilus which are the ones originally fitted on the Freelander 2.

All it takes is a slight upward pressure and the tailgate opens automatically.
