The 150k miles 07 plate needs rear shocks change, hammered home when I drove the newer one and I could tell how thumpy and skittish the old girl has got. Plus, the last Mot reported light misting of oil, so it's well due. Quote 1: main dealer new to area, £801. I thought this was high. Quote 2: LR authorised, still waiting for them to get back to me, great service guys. Quote 3: now this is a new one on me. Main dealer I've bought new from and have used for service. Will not quote for replacement until they've done a diagnostics assessment that will cost me £135, after which they will quote for repair. If I accept the quote I get back the £135, if I do not they keep my money. So I asked, if you're quote is 4 times the others I've got what happens then? They too are now going to "get back to me". Some main dealers don't do themselves any favours...

So as she is in semi-retirement, only really used for dogs and shooting now, about 2.5-3k miles per year, I guess it's time to consider leaving the authorised network and going specialist Indy. £487, written estimate emailed to me same day.

Any garage will replace the shocks for you no problem, if the car has done 150k & it's a 07 plate it's not going to make any difference to the cars value if its main dealer service or local garage service history, try this web site www.repairanycar.com

In my area there is a mobile mechanic, I buy the parts , he fits them, far cheaper than any garage & he comes to you , home or work , have any in your area , worth a look. I had one replaced last year but it was under warranty, only an hour's job at most

I agree with muckboots - At your FL2's age, mileage and usage then identifying a recommended local indy and getting them to replace them for you sounds the way forward to me.

A quick scan of the web makes it look like the FL2 rear shocks are about £100 each e.g. these one's currently on ebay;

An option might even be buying these rear shocks yourself and asking your local indy for a quote to fit them for you if they are happy to do that?

If you prefer you could even buy the original Equipment Land Rover rear shock in this listing ;

Then buy the other brand new right hand shock direct from Land Rover and get the indy to quote fit the genuine Land Rover units if you would prefer.

In your case I suspect the cheaper pattern rear shocks in the first ebay listing would still easily meet your requirements for years to come.

I had my nearside rear done at last MOT and the bill was £180 parts and fitting!!!

Thanks all for comments, always interesting. You're not kidding about talking to wrong garages - I won't be paying any of those prices! I was just gobsmacked by the £801 quote, I didn't pay that for the dreaded 150k service so I won't pay it for a couple of shocks. I'm no longer maintaining it for resale value, that ship has obviously sailed, but I still want to look after it properly - even an old HSE is still a really nice second car/capable off road hack. (I think we both secretly prefer it to the newer one but just aren't saying it...)

I know someone who uses a mobile mechanic so I think I'll contact them, thanks for that suggestion. And my MOT'er is a good bloke so I'll check him out too. PM'ing Dan@duckworth to see what he can do on genuine parts before I decide on parts.

I replaced rear shocks myself on previous car, it's not difficult. Get get your local mechanic to do it if you don't want to do it yourself. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

I'm looking at replacing my rear shockers soon , the best price I've had is from Paddock landrover spares and they are £60 each and come with a 2 year guarantee. Labour I've been quote around £35/40 per side .

I'm just about to purchase a 2007 HSE here in France but if failed the CT (french MOT) on a dodgy rear shock....

I've done most things on all my Discoverys and a fair bit on a FREELANDER 1. Is it a simple job to replace the rear shocks on the F2? Having searched read a rew other posts it doesn't appear to be too difficult except for the time to remove the trim to get access?

Do I need any special tools (spring compressor) or just a large hammer and a lot of patience?

The rear shocks are not too difficult to remove and really a very similar setup to a large number of other vehicles out there.

I found I did require a pair of spring compressors in order to safely separate the spring from the rear shock once I had removed the unit from the car.

If you have done similar jobs on Discoveries or Freelander 1's I'm sure you will have no problems with this.
