Hello, First time poster.
I have a 2008 2.2 auto HSE freelander 2 with 95k on the clock. Its starting to fall to bits, and im trying to decide if repairing is worth it, or if it is scrap time!
About 2 weeks ago, the car started to howl a little when driven - sounded like it was from the rear, but difficult to localise when in motion. I was suspecting wheel bearings, but when I lifted it, the rear wheels spin freely and feel good. I also wanted to check that the Haldex was happy as it hasn't ever been serviced as far as im aware, so lifted the whole car so all 4 wheels could spin.
With all 4 wheels off the ground, and the car in drive, the propshaft to the rear isn't turning and the front PTU makes a horrific clicking sound. I think its conclusively dead!
As a sanity check for the haldex, when the car is switched off, moving the propshaft by hand does not turn the rear wheels. With the car ignition on (but in park) the wheels do turn when I spin the propshaft (which I guess also demonstrates the PTU is toast) - I'm assuming this is correct behavior of the haldex that it would lock up to some extent at rest for low speed traction? Rear wheels spin freely when I move the propshaft, with some clicking sounds from the rear diff / joints area.
I'm trying to decide if its worth DIY replacing the front diff, I have seen reconditioned units for £450 that I could pick up locally, but its a job I haven't done before, and I want to be sure that my Haldex and rear diff are in decent health before I commit. Could anyone suggest any more tests I could do (on my drive!) that can confirm they are ok or ? My concern is I end up spending thousands on a car that isn't worth it.
Returning to the PTU, any words of wisdom before I attempt a DIY repair ? I have a fairly well stocked garage
I usually rely on YouTube for info before I attempt such things but my googling skills aren't getting me anywhere!
Thanks in advance.
