Spent many many years fixing forklifts for a living, and every Monday morning int the Autumn / winter / spring was spent driving around jump starting diesel trucks. The standard engine for the time was a Perkins 4-203, that's 203 cubic inches (3.3L) and we had Escort vans - 1.3petrol.
My advice is buy a newspaper, connect the jump leads and read the newspaper. Half an hour later YOU start the dead engine. At that point your vehicle is assisting the now partially charged stricken vehicle, rather than relying on the jump leads and crocodile clips to carry hundreds of amps.
The reason you start the stricken vehicle is that the other driver is tempted to rev the b*ll*cks off his now started engine, his much larger alternator then blows the backside out of your alternator and you have a long drive home with no alternator, can't use the headlights, wipers, or fan as they will flatten the battery before you get back to the depot to join the other engineers changing their alternators.
Trying to start a larger engine with your engine turned off sounds great, right up to the point where the forklift driver manages to flatten your battery as well, that phone call back to the depot is not one you want to do twice. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
