Jump starting amps

I was asked to jump start yet another car in our street. Recently there was one Audi Q5 twice within a few weeks (I am hoping to get more than bottles of wine as a thank you) & another Audi Q5 today (wine would be the most I would accept, let's just leave it at that). The information on the first one, it was an old battery. Second Audi was a cheap replacement battery.

I grabbed my clamp meter, it was down to 2.4 volts, apparently the car was not used for a few weeks, but really, not good enough for an 18 month old battery.

Anyway, for reference with my DC clamp meter using my previous 2013 Land Rover (Exide) battery to jump start which I keep for testing things & charged.

Diesel 6 cylinder 344 amps to start.

My 2.0L petrol turbo engine 238 amps to start.

You're welcome. With a bit of guestimation the more figures there are the easier it is to figure out what is going on. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Wish I had this sort of information months ago.
It seems farcical that dealers don't have this sort of information. What is more annoying, is that the manufacturer will not give you a bench mark figure. Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !

Freelander now gone.

Spent many many years fixing forklifts for a living, and every Monday morning int the Autumn / winter / spring was spent driving around jump starting diesel trucks. The standard engine for the time was a Perkins 4-203, that's 203 cubic inches (3.3L) and we had Escort vans - 1.3petrol.

My advice is buy a newspaper, connect the jump leads and read the newspaper. Half an hour later YOU start the dead engine. At that point your vehicle is assisting the now partially charged stricken vehicle, rather than relying on the jump leads and crocodile clips to carry hundreds of amps.

The reason you start the stricken vehicle is that the other driver is tempted to rev the b*ll*cks off his now started engine, his much larger alternator then blows the backside out of your alternator and you have a long drive home with no alternator, can't use the headlights, wipers, or fan as they will flatten the battery before you get back to the depot to join the other engineers changing their alternators.

Trying to start a larger engine with your engine turned off sounds great, right up to the point where the forklift driver manages to flatten your battery as well, that phone call back to the depot is not one you want to do twice. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

The Freelander 2 Owner's Handbook (printed 2012) pages 169-170 gives instructions how to jumpstart. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
