Reset Auto Gearbox

I've read many people mentioning that the auto gearbox learns your driving style...

But is there anyway to reset this - so it learns my driving style and not the previous owners?

I'm guessing you can probably do this by disconnecting the battery and leaving it awhile - but what about when driving?

In my SMGII M3 you use to put it into neutral and put both paddles for 5 seconds while driving over 50mpg?

Doesn't it constantly adapt, so that after a while it'll have forgotten the previous owner and adapted to your driving style?

Over 50mpg, you mean coasting down hill then Laughing
Freelander constantly adapts within a few miles it changes, doesn't take long, it's not a sports car so there is no real need to reset it?

now that was a typo Rolling with laughter - don't think the M3 ever made 50mpg even coasting down a hill...

Oh right - sounds good if it constantly re-adjusts...

Are we sure? I have change gearboxs oil, and my gear continues whit this problems:
-keeps the gears too low (especially in curve)
-randomly slight shift in gear change
-reverse hard to take gas
-in the standing start it takes 2 seconds to take gas

in sport should be all that much better already

(I bought the car a few months ago whit 60.000km)

With my previous car (bmw 335), all these problems have been fixed with a reset gear

You need dealer capabilities/diagnostic tools to reset adaptions, especially after changing oil.

Alex, does that mean that gearbox oil change should not be attempted in a home workshop? Would it be bad if adaptation is not reset? MY10 TD4 SE Auto

Gearbox reset

Hi everyone
I carried out the following procedure and it seems to have cured the 'odd' gearshifts, e.g unexpected downshift when going up inclines, not holding the gear, causing the engine to scream without any increase in speed etc. I think the cause is down to my attempts at driving like a vicar in order to save an extra 3 mpg, so after carrying out the following, I drove it like I stole it, and it drives like a new car.
Adaptive transmission reset procedure:
1. Insert key fob in dash
2. Turn on ignition by pressing the start button WITHOUT foot on brake (I.e. Don't start the engine)
3. Press accelerator to the floor for 30 seconds
4. Release accelerator pedal leave key in dash, and press the start button to switch off ignition...wait 30 seconds
5. Start car as normal, and drive it hard for a few miles.

I'd be interested to hear if it fixes anyone else's erratic auto box, or if I'm just feeling a placebo effect ( although my wife commented on how 'normal' the car now feels).

For what it's worth I used to have an auto FL1 (five speed) and that would quickly adapt to your driving style. I used to work about 7 miles away and have to drive down a long hill for the last mile home which has a 40mph limit. Depending on whether I had pootled home or was in a rush seemed to make a big difference to gear changes going down the hill. The Fl2 behaves differently and the changes are not so obvious. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

I have just done the reset as quoted previously on a SD4 and it has made a difference to how it drives.

I also confirm that I followed steps posted by freelanderi6 and my car now drives much smoother.

The auto box in last months was shifting very roughly, especially between 2nd and 3rd gears both up and down, sometimes it made the whole car jump - it felt like if I stepped hard on brakes. I thought that tranmission oil needed changing so on last service they did. Even though the oil was very dirty, there was no change in how the car was shifting until I conducted the "adaptive reset" few days ago.

Thanks a lot freelanderi6 for posting the procedure.

That also works on Evoques and many other cars. It's not the gearbox you are setting though. It's the throttle body. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
Evoque SD4 Dynamic Lux Auto
Present: Audi A3 S Line.
