United States 2012 LR2 i6 HSE Auto Barolo Black
Roof Rails Cross Bar Needed?

Hi Everyone! This past week I attempted to install non-oem roof rails and crossbar to my 2012 HSE with sunroof. After the struggle with the replica bars, I wished I spent the extra money and went OEM.

I had trouble with the fit, plastic coverers, and could not get the rear cross bar on to save my life. See photo of the bar I could not get installed.

Due to time, I installed 2 cross bars to help with any support until I figure out what to do.

My question is that if I have additional cross bars on, will I need the one that bolts directly to the rails? I only plan on having ski / snowboards on the roof.

Thanks in advance!

Thank afterwards.

Yes.

You need the brace to brace horizontally. The crossbars are designed for a vertical load.

Sticky tape on the plastic covers with a patch of black cloth tape. They are very expensive to replace & they tend to fall off.

The rails are cheaply made, read this thread to fix them up.

Also watch the rear foot. On the inside edge it can touch the roof. Add a large hot dipped galvanized washer to raise the foot a few mm.

Don't tighten any of the bolts until you have everything together.
I have the non genuine bars, fitted OK for me. Re the plastic covers, attach them with sikaflex and you'll not lose them. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

As I have broken a few bolts into the roof I need the covers to be easily removable in the outback.

The rails I have are the copies, but the crossbars are originals, they have the LR logo on the ends.

I have also straightened the crossbars, they are pretty tough. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
