Spotlight Trigger

Afternoon guys, I've fitted two 6" Nilight LED light bars and want to switch them via the headlights main beam. Spent ages this morning looking for a main beam fuse to piggy back, with no luck, turns out headlights might not have fuses? Next plan is to splice into the cable powering the main beam shutter, spent some time with a multimeter checking the power to the individual connections on LH headlight connector. I can't locate a connection with 12v when full beam on which changes to 0v with main beam off. Car is 2013 GS.
Can anyone advise how to energise the spotlight relay using main beam please, any help gratefully received,

Cheers,

PMG

There was a similar post recently, as the late models share same bulb for dip and main beam there is no dedicated main beam circuit, just a flap or shutter which is opened for main beam. Not sure if it's possible to take off the wiring for it, or indeed the main beam switch loom inside the car? Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

Hi Bob, I was hoping the power to the shutter for main beam was 12v and easy to find. Couldn't locate a connection on the headlamp plug which powered up with 12v when main beam switched on. Anyone know if the shutter motor is 12v and where I can find the cable?
Cheers.

As far as I know the FL2 lights are not fused individually, but each and every lamp is electronically controlled via Field Effect Transistors. The individual ccts are monitored and the current to any abnormal/faulty lamp will be disabled.

I wouldn't bother messing about with 2 X 6" light bar's, as the output is useless at higher speeds.
I'm going to install a 24" led bar behind my grille, as I know it makes more than enough light to light the road, even at motorway speeds.

As for the shutter power issue, I'm guessing it's at the light plug, but it could be a PWM signal, which is also used to control the light level adjustment (for vehicle loading), using the same shutter.
You may have to do some research as to whether LR made a spot lamp kit for the facelift FL2 (there is a kit for the pre-facelift).

Alternatively fit your own switch, but like I said, I'd not bother with tiny LED bars like that. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Ultimate. The family car.

Thanks for taking the time to reply guys, might just install a switch in cabin when I run the cables through, if there isn't 12v at the stalk. Nodge68, I had to use small lights for now as I've used the "Beavis Pit" grille brackets, so can't use anything too heavy.
If the extra light is worth the effort I'll upgrade at a later date

I don't know the strength of the casting resin BP is using in his light mounts, but the 24" LED bar I've got isn't very heavy, and would be a perfect fit in front or behind the grille mesh, which is where I'm putting it.
If I could get the plastic front protector at a sensible price, I'd fit the LED bar to in the open spaceof that, like I did with my FL1.

ive just had 2 small spots wired into my main beam shutters. Not convinced on the light output yet but as the wiring is already in place should be a relatively easy upgrade to some 7'' light bars.

I had them done by Richard at LR Diagnostics in Mansfield, might be worth a call to him to ask how he did mine

On the cars with single lens headlamp and LED DRL, the high/dip beam is provided by a mechanical shutter which is controlled by a ground switched signal in the headlamp loom (ie if you meter it, it will go low for high beam and 12V for dip beam).

If you remove the headlamp unit from the car (a couple of screws and a lever at the back then slide forward) you can get inside the headlamp and trace the wires which control the shutter. You would have to add a relay to switch your additional load.

RogB, left a message and a text for your guy, no response as yet. Would it be possible for you to have a quick look under your bonnet to see if you can see where he's taken the live for your spotlight relay, I'd be very grateful?

Cheers,

PMG.

Had another attempt this morning. I've connected relay power cable to headlamp shutter which has red and black cables, this powers relay on main beam. I've just wedged the cable into the connector for now, not ideal. I tried a blue scotchlok but the cable is too small for it to bite.
Any advice for the best way to permanently join the two small cables?

Cheers.

So we've established its a red/black wire to tap a main beam feed off?
Smaller red scotch locks are available but I'd splice and solder a connection to it then insulate. Interested to see your finished set up. Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948
