Well guys, this fault is not so rare as it first seemed. I will give the dealer another week before I ratchet up the anti. I will keep the forum up to date with progress. Ralph

Had my removable towball and the receiver replaced for this Knocking and it still occurs. would be interested to know of any mod as it sounds as though the towball is going to break in half?

I spoke with the dealer about three weeks ago and he says that he has heard nothing yet. I intend to increase the pressure after a few more weeks.
Following on from the greasing of the bar it sounds to me that the clearances between the two fulcrum pins and the detent pin at the end of the bar are too large and allow the tow ball to pivot on the fulcrum, hence the noise which is probably more subdued if damped by the grease. Ralph

Just quick question ref these tow hooks as no instructions with mine. First time I had ever used it and was difficult to keep in and lock, but seems okay now. Can you confirm that when green marker is visible it is locked and safe? Thanksssssssssssss

there was a technical bulletin regarding knocking from tow bar swan necks.
My totally incompetent landrover dealer had my previous FR2 in 4 times for severe banging from the rear when towing and the dufus of a mechanic suggested my caravan was too big for the car.

However when i was in the South of France I met up with another FR2 owner with the same issue and it was he that told me there was a technical bulletin to fix the issue.
The bulletin says if you have a swan neck with 216 ( i think ) stamped into the top of the tow ball it needs new tow bar and swan neck.
You will probably find that if you grab hold of the swan neck it will have about 10mm of vertical movement. Its actually an MOT failure if it has more than 3 mm of movement but MOtT testing is so poor these are often overlooked by incompetent testers who don't read !

My tow-bar and swan neck was eventually replaced 2 years after first reporting and it never ever knocked or clunked afterwards Jaguar x-type sport gone
