Clunking noise when braking

Howdy all
Freelander 2 2014 sd4 auto hse
I changed all brake discs and pads in August this year all went well with no problems.
Recently I have been getting a small clunk when I brake, it sound like I have left one of the brake pad shims out
and the pad is grabbing the disc and clunking against the caliper. After checking all wheels again everything is in order.
It on happens when I brake. If I sit with the engine running and go through the gears drive then reverse There is no clunking noise but its there when I brake.
No juddering or grinding when turning just when I brake. Is it possible the drive shafts could be worn?
Thank you all in advance for any information that would help.

Hi Nocky,

I too have this very noise but alas I'm not sure where it originates from so I do hope someone on here will have an answer.

My noise is only when I apply the brakes too! Kind regards.

Paul

Were the new pads a good fit in the caliper guides? could be a pad floating perhaps? 2014 Freelander 2 TD4 Manual Dynamic

I assume that you checked all the bolts that you removed when doing the brakes are tight, and wheel nuts? If so, then check Ball Jionts for movement, followed by rotational play in inner and outer CV joints. AS its an Auto, its the wearin the Valve Block, you will need to get the software updated in the short term to make sure it can adapt to your driving style.

Its definitely from the front.
As I approach a junction or to slow down
It happens, if I move forward or reverse then it doesn't happen
Only when I apply the brakes🙄

Hi, if there was no noise with the previous pads, then try changing them for anothar make and see what happens. I have had clunks on braking when the strut top bearing has failed. Sometimes the whole top of the strut will move back and forwards, both when stopping, and it returns as the brake pressure releases as one moves forward again.

Late reply i know I've been working away from home so not much time to
Reply.
Anyway the clunking noise was the result of buying front brake pads from auto doc. I decided to go to my local care spares and bought a front set of reputable brake pads and it did the trick. When compared with the set I got from auto doc there was a slight difference in length, not noticeable unless you out them back to back and looked hard. So I took the chance bought them fitted them and hey presto.
Thank you all for your input.

I use Auto Doc for a few bits and pieces and always found them reasonably priced, just going to point out that with their parts they more often than not offer several different makes of varying quality and price. It's the buyers decision to choose.
