Looks like I have the same issue on my gearbox so i am taking it out tomorrow to cut the sleeve off.

It's not very hard, but when you separate the gearbox, one way you can easily remove the crown wheel and the other way you need to remove the gear set first. So when I did it, it was the wrong way first I just put the cover back on with a couple of bolts turned it over took the cover off and removed the crown wheel and cut the sleeve off in the vice. Forgot to add, the loctite I used to seal the transmission was very expensive, £40 a tube, I don't know if you can use an equivalent that's cheaper but it's important because an increase in thickness could change the bearing preload |

Brilliant, Thanks for the info. I found a russian website via google with pictures of the gearbox dismantled and armed with these, and your tips, I am reasonably confident.
