A friend of a friend of my brothers wife said that there may be a shortage of Land Rover Freelander 2s.

You really need to get facts correct……the power station was because of the fire in the Kent relay station stopped us importing energy (for use by everyone!) from France , and as to the Prius only doing 6 mpg on petrol….. what a load of !

I have to say that i don't buy all this "panic buying" narrative. It's just a convenient handle for the government to pass the blame on to others and for the media to whip up a frenzy of a self fulfilling prophecy

You only had to look at the newspaper headlines on Friday morning to know what was going to happen and sure enough......it did!! Corporal Jones would have been proud!!

It seems to me that most motorists who are queuing up for fuel are acting in a totally rational way. Under normal circumstances I am happy to run down to almost empty before refilling as I feel confident that I can find an open filling station with supplies. If I lose that confidence then I will look ahead to what I need for the next week or more and try to make sure I am covered in advance. I don't want to be running out on a motorway or out in the middle of nowhere. Then I would panic!!

The government is happy to consistently tell us lies about just about anything and everything and then seems surprised that no one believes them when they tell us that there isn't a problem. hey ho!!

Yes and no. Travelled back from Yorkshire on Saturday 280 miles, all ok up there but nearer home, especially services on M11 were queueing, lot there with roof boxes, trailers etc suggesting they were going somewhere and would be needing fuel.
Contrast that with newsreel today and local stories where people are queueing, get to the pump then spend no more than a minute 'refuelling' which suggests topping up. Local Asda restricting to £30 apparently

In Australia on average about 5 litres per day per vehicle. People tend to fill the tank once they get down to the last 20%.

So for argument's sake. 80% of the tank is used. Let's say 40 litres typical capacity is used.

So on average from full to empty tanks, only has 20 usable litres in a tank. So on average about 4 days fuel in tanks.

It doesn't take long to run out. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Media still causing uproar about it, I listen to Radio 2 constantly, normally enjoy the Jeremy Vine lunchtime show, today I felt they are just sensationalising it further, causing more issues than being helpful. Filled my Freelander yesterday (when it needed filling, not Friday when I considered doing so but didn't, because I understand the concept of panic buying). Well worth a read in full, but for those that don't this is the conclusion, which I agree with.

These just-in-time systems only work if consumers are confident in their functioning and trust people in charge. That is a lesson that might be tested again in the next few months.

After that, many in big business are pondering if, in current circumstances, the way supplies get to market needs to be more about "just in case" than "just in time". If that transpires, then consumers will end up fitting the bill with even more price rises.

From my own experience, as a senior field engineer / manager in a large company, I have often fought to make cases for keeping a little contingency in the system. Yes it costs money, but the results of having a lack of resources at a critical time
can have a damaging (and costly) effect on the companies reputation and future business.
Unfortunately, while taking part in a few company-wide working parties, that quick fixes found more favour with the higher management than any considered long term plan.

I still believe we need a government that is willing to plan well ahead and build some contingency into our national systems such as the NHS (more beds and trained staff), Power (more standby supplies & storage capacity), Police (more PCs AND background staff), etc.

Yes it will cost us all money, but it will solve the problems better than employing spin doctors to blame someone else.
