Rear brake pads

Hi group,
How thick is the friction material on the rear brake pads when new on a 2011 Freelander diesel?

Hi,

a good way to find those sort of details is to use Advance Factors web site, click on their link as a sponsor and you can click through to the rear pads section and find they are 15.8mm

For my 3.2 --> LR023888

Total thickness 15.3 mm

Backing plate 5.8 mm

Friction material thickness 9.5 mm


I think the PADS are the same for the Diesel and Petrol Version

Some garages and testers state 8mm is advisory, some cars use pads at an alarming rate in that they may not last a service interval, the FL2 is easy on pads , even the auto versions. I considered 3mm was time to change, some consider 5mm is time to change as they can't dissipate heat adequately which leads to loss of efficiency. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

I use a set of these

BLADE SIZES -
Green: 12mm, 10mm, 8mm
Yellow: 6mm, 5mm, 4mm
Red: 3mm, 2mm

And I do change the pads before I get into the RED.

Note: this type of gauge will round down

3.8 mm will fail at 4 mm
and pass at 3 mm

So even though the Pads are closer to 4 mm they will be measured at 3 mm in this example

Hi,

do you do your own service work or take it to a garage?

if you do your own, take one of the wheels off and have a good look then decide how quick you need to order and change the pads.

if you take into a garage think about taking into somewhere for a Free brake check then decide ?

One advantage of changing them before they "Need" replacing is the caliper pistons are back inside the caliper rather than outside in the crud.

Always do my own. Have the wheels off approx every 5k miles to rotate them to even wear. Check brake pads then. Not like my sister in law who's brakes let her know when they need changed by the metal of the pads touching the disc 😮 Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

I always used genuine LR pads and only ever got 20,000 miles per set of rear pads, actually got to the stage where I carried a set in the boot.
One day I took the wife to the supermarket, heard metal to metal on the way there, and changed the pads while she was shopping - less than an hour on the carpark. Discs used to last 40,000 miles.

DS is not much different, 33k and new pads needed - in this case the discs are useless so new Brembo discs await. Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her
Replaced by Ewok what a mistake - now a happy Disco Sport owner

I do brakes myself, pretty easy on the freedeux. Rotate every 10k miles, so take a good look then.

I'm using raybestos rotors and akebono ceramic pads, have over 40K on them now with plenty of meat remaining. Ceramics make a lot less dust too.

On previous cars once I had a set of old pads I got them re-shoed with metal pads. They lasted longer which was not the issue I was overly worried about. They braked better & slower fade. Also basically no dust.

I have my first set of used rear pads from a year ago, the front have still have plenty of pad left. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
