England 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Santorini Black
Suitable replacement for Castrol MTF97309

Hi, I am wanting to change my manual Freelanders gearbox oil but cannot find the oil quoted in the manual which is Castrol MTF97309 or even the Specification of it.

I have emailed Castrol but had no response, would this be a suitable replacement? Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle 75W-90
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-739-castrol-sy...x-oil.aspx

or can anyone suggest a suitable oil?

Thanks

I emailed Millers oils a while back, Opie do Millers with a 10% discount for Freel2 members.

Hello Robert
Thank you for coming back to me with the info and the oils that you now need are. Gearbox TRX SYNTH 75W/80 2ltrs, Transferbox TRX SYNTH 75W/90 0.75ltrs, Rear Differential TRX SYNTH 75W/90 0.75ltrs. The front differential is from the Transaxle manual gearbox. Please note do not use the 75w/90 for the gearbox you must use the 75w/80 as you will not be able to select the gears if you use a 75w/90 grade and I know it seems a bit of a inconvenience in having to buy two gear oils but it is down to the design of the gearbox and for fuel economy. Take no notice of the antifoaming BOT oil as all gear oils have anti foam additive otherwise the oils would be all over the place. They try to frighten people into taking the car into the main dealers and pay through the nose for something which they think is special and it is not.

Regards
Nigel.

Trust that helped, Yorky. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

Many thanks for your reply, I had not heard of Miller's oil before but reading they do seem to have a good reputation.

Can I apply for my discount online or on the telephone?

Castrol Syntrans V FE 75w-80 & the above Millers TRX is the closest I can find to Castrol MTF97309.

As you can see below in the Volvo spec the original MTF was indeed a 75w/80. Most people seem to be using a 75w/90 which according to Millers in the above post is a heavy'er grade & can possibly cause gear select problems. Be interesting to know if anyone has experienced gear select problems using a 75w/90 grade gear oil?

Here is the original spec from Volvo:

Volvo part number 1161745

Quality: API GL-4 / Volvo transmission oil MTF 97309 / WSS-M2C200-C3

Viscosity: SAE 75W-80

Density @ 15°C / 59°F: 841kg/m³

Oil base: Fully synthetic

Pourpoint: -60°C / -76°F

Flashpoint: 230°C / 446°F

Kinematic viscosity @ 40°C/104°F: 59.8mm²/s

Kinematic viscosity @ 100°C/212°F: 10.1mm²/s
