Headlamp Washers

Had my Freelander 2 for about 18 months now, recently I discovered the the headlamp washers weren't working.

Quickly found the problem when I discovered that the fuse was missing!

Fitted new fuse & all worked correctly without any issues.

That was about two weeks ago, this evening after coming home from work, I looked out the window & was greeted to the sight of a new water feature in the drive.

L/H headlamp washer going full noise, this with no key in & locked!

Of course because the fuse box is on the L/H side, I got an early shower by removing the fuse. (Now I know why it was missing)!

I haven't had a chance to look at a wiring diagram as yet but does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this issue?

Off on holiday for 3 weeks, so will not have a chance to investigate until I get back.

I'd start with relay 9 in the battery junction box - this is the one which powers the headlamp wash on command of the CJB.

The headlamp washers are only supposed to operate when the ignition and headlamps are on, and then according to a complex algorithm involving timers and counting windscreen wash operations, so the likelihood is that a fault with the relay or wiring is causing the pump to be energised when it should not be.

It sounds as though you have another problem too, though, if only the left-hand washer was operating. The headlamp washers are fed from a single pump so it should be both or neither - you probably have a blockage somewhere, or possibly a pipe off. (The pipe has a connector which pushes into the jet itself - these can come loose, as has happened to me, resulting in the water running down inside the bumper instead of through the jet.)

Hi pab, thanks for that, I'll look into it once I'm back from hols.

I don't think/hope there is another problem though, as the headlamp washers operate alternately, so I assume that is why only the l/h one was running. Will update once I get it sorted.

There is one 'power wash' pump but two outputs from the ECU, each output goes to a separate relay which in turn drives the pump in a different direction, the pump has two outlets.

So they do - I'd never noticed that!

Relay 12 is the second headlamp wash relay, so both 9 and 12 will need to be checked.

Just as an update on my old thread!

I have never really got to the bottom of this.

I have swapped out all the relays that control this system & it made no difference whatsoever.

The system when fully functional will work correctly & without fail. Then out of the blue 2/3 weeks later the pump will kick in & one headlamp washer will fire up until I pull the fuse.

I have checked out the wiring from the under bonnet fuse box & found no issues.

I can only think there must be some sort of faulty component in the CJB, so I am happy to live with them not working!

I really don’t see how it could be the wiper switch as the headlamp washer system is controlled by the CJB, not from the switch. (Now Sold). 2008 Freelander 2 (Nazca Sand) SE TD4 Auto. Statutory write off & on WOVR for hail damage but still road legal.
