I am hoping to pick-up our new motor shortly. How can I check to find out when the vehicle was built?

Ask the supplying dealer. TD4 e went into production 16th March according to the press release

According to the Owners Handbook (page 210) the vehicle production date is shown on the tyre pressure label attached to the right-hand 'B' post. However the plate on my Freely did not contain this info. It has also been mentioned on this forum that there is a dated sticky label under the spare wheel cover that is the production date. I found paper label and the date on it seemed pretty close to when I thought my Freely was built, however a readout from the dealers info on my car informed that the build date was slightly different to the sticky label.

I am not sure how the VIN number numerals corrisponds with the actual build date, but I will try and check later today (if I remember).

Yes, in front of the spare wheel.
