Are you sure it's not towards the front as the throttle body "whines" on shut down.

the electric pump in the tank is a balance pump to keep fuel in the take off side of the tank and does not push any fuel to the engine, fuel is only sucked to the engine by the mechanical pump on the engine.

That's the throttle body. gears will be stripped. Do you get shudder on engine shut down? Classic symptom. Andy Freelander2 HSE (59 Plate, MY10 spec) |

No, nothing like a shudder. And it runs fine! |

If the TB is stuck open the engine will work OK but you will get a slower shut down or run on.

Thanks. I don't have any of those symptoms, it's just a high-pitched whine... |

A high pitched whine is normal.

Thanks, but it's quite loud! I have an MoT in half an hour, I'll get a second opinion. If it if the TB I don't mind replacing it even though I'm selling it. They seem quite cheap and access is easy. It's just... why do the gears run continuously? If I disconnect it, will it still start?

It's definitely the throttle body.

If it's stuck partially open\closed will affect performance. I noticed an improvement in mpg after changing mine.
