Power Transfer Unit oil

I’m gathering up a selection of various oils and filters for my 2008 FL2 but will be getting a local indie to do the work. (I’m getting too old to crawl under cars!). My question is, has anyone found an alternative for the Castrol BOT 118/95 PTU oil which at around fifty quid a litre is nearly as dear as printer ink?

Yes, I know in the grand scheme of things, an extra twenty or thirty quid on an oil change isn’t a big deal but it’s more the principle of the thing - is there really only one oil that meets the LR spec?

Interestingly if you use the oil finder for your vehicle reg on the Castrol website - it lists 5 oils for the rear diff (two are incorrect viscosity) and nothing for the front diff. In fact BOT118/95 doesnt exist according to that website.

The Millers website (works much better than the Castrol one) recommends (based on my vehicle Reg)

I searched a lot and in the end decided it was all a much of a muchness so I used

Thanks guys. I checked out Island 4x4 and when you add £15 for shipping (to NI) and £7.50 VAT it’s twice the price listed!

I’d found the Millers Oils offer but wondered what others had used. It’s strange that there isn’t an obvious alternative to the Castrol one.

Thanks again. I’m just browsing looking at oils at the moment and if I use the tech spec of the Millers 75/90 GL5 that produces a lot more options. It’s hard to believe that the PTU needs such an exclusive oil as surely the same, or similar, unit is found in other cars with the Aisin box such as Volvo?

P.S. In searching for oils I see that Aisin do an oil for their auto box - ATF 6. One could hardly go wrong with that.

Using the spec of the Millers Oils example referenced above as a guide I opted for Mobilube 1 SHC 75W/90 for the PTU (and Aisin Premium ATF 6 for the gearbox).

Artic - it fits the specs so should be fine I'd have thought.

I used a Pela pump to get the oil out of my PTU.

Awkward but got most of the oil out - you'd never get all out anyway unless you disassemble it.
