'14 LR2 Voice Command on steering wheel

OK, dealer knows nothing - I have a new US spec LR2 - pushing the voice command on the steering wheel mutes the radio - absolutely nothing else. It will not respond to any commands. I do not have a HSE and no NAV - I can't believe that I can't initiate a phone call via voice commands without NAV? Shouldn't it allow me to control the phone at a minimum?

Thanks,

Hi Ratherman,

What phone do you have? On my MY10 XS the voice control passes the voice command functionality to my iphone.
That is, it's the iPhone Siri that I'm talking to. I believe the car has some functionality but I would have to set up names and number etc. Does any of that make sense? I take it your phone is definitely paired to the car ok?

Both my Android and my wife's iPhone are paired and work fine - I can see our address books, etc.. According to the owners manual, a menu (showing the voice options) is supposed to come up when you push the voice command button. On our VW, I can push a similar button and tell it, for example, "Call Jim Smith" and it will look in the address book and find an entry for Jim Smith, or "Call Number", "Redial", etc..

Hmm. When you press the voice command button do you hold it in for a couple of seconds? On mine I have to press and hold the button until I hear a chime which tells me I can give the command.

I suspect the system in your car is more up to date than mine so I'm afraid I've no more ideas...
I'm sure someone else will chime in.

The second you push the button it should beep and respond with 'Say a command'.

You state that you do not have an HSE - as far as I know, only the HSE/HSE Lux come with SWYS function, although this again could be country specific. What variant is it? Foraging near Gaydon....

In the US - it is defined as the Base - hard for me to believe that you need the HSE to do simple voice commands with the phone - especially since most states require hands-free use only...

The same steering wheel is fitted to all versions of the Freelander 2 post MY13MY. The voice command function is only available on vehicles with a higher spec audio system. In the UK this meant it was only available on XS, Dynamic and HSE vehicles and not the S and GS.

In simple terms, no sat nav = lower spec audio and therefore no voice command function even though the button is there on the steering wheel.

But you should be able to pair to phone via bluetooth even on a base spec vehicle and make hands free calls using the display screen and buttons.

Nope it won't work. As above, steering wheels are the same across the different specs as such, obviously some have padded leather or different trim colours.

I've got the voice command button but not the enabled option or nav etc. So a pointless button!

However, if I press and hold the home button on my iPhone 5, it will enable Siri through the bluetooth connection and allow me to use that functionality. 2013 FL2 - Black Edition Auto

Does this help?

It seems to depend on your phone model AND which airtime supplier you use - they issue different bluetooth protocols Td4 XS manual, Orkney Grey, MY2014

Thanks everyone!

Yes it does - sad that they required navigation just to control the phone (or radio, etc.) via voice commands - but thanks everyone - just confirms to me again how stupid my dealer is - it reminds me of when I tried to bring in my BMW 850i (v12) when the traction control didn't work and they were like a deer in headlights (ended up troubleshooting/fixing it myself). I wanted the HSE...I guess all it takes is more money...

Hi I'm facing the same problem.. mine is from the year 2014. The strange thing is when I bought the LR2 at the dealer I was driving home. On the highway I tested the voice command on the steering wheel twice and it worked perfect. But then I did not use it for a while and now suddenly it doesn't work anymore. I does nothing but it's really strange it worked before... Any one got an explanation? And I don't have the satnav the beeping sound isn't even there
