You lost the argument based on FACTS. Rolling with laughter

It’s quite sad that you can’t accept it.

With your logic if I showed a picture of a blue pen, you’d say it’s red.

I dare say there are a lot that do agree with him but can't be bothered to get involved in a petty squabble.

Looks like this topic is a very grey area and drivers interpret the situation depending on their experience, attitude, etc and respond accordingly.

A good topic promoting good discussion which I'm sure will make us all think about the merging scenario maybe a bit more, which can only be a good thing. Thumbs Up

Rather like the real driving situation this thread has become rather emotive at times. A feature of the human psyche which often leads to road rage, sadly.

Why do minor (otherwise inconsequential act) acts of driving (where nobody is hurt and nothing is damaged) cause so much offence and rage? Studied much by scientists interested in animal behaviours. Jules

The problem is that most drivers think that they are the best drivers on the road and whatever happens, it's certainly not their fault.

We all make mistakes and hopefully learn from them, but being polite and courteous on the road costs nothing.

But I am the best driver on the road and it's never my fault. Whistle Common sense isn't very common.

There are a few places in the country with permanent “Merge in Turn” signs where 2 lanes narrow into one. I’ve never seen any incidents of blocking or discourteous driving where such a sign is prominently displayed. Everyone happily cooperates.

On the other hand we have all witnessed blocking and cutting in at temporary roadworks where the narrowing is signed in advance but without a “Merge in Turn” instruction.

Perhaps better signage would help?

I personally choose to join the queuing slower lane rather than push in at the obstruction as that is so widely perceived as discourteous whatever the Highway Code says. You want to be in an emotionally neutral state for safe driving.

I also make an effort to let in cars that have been “trapped” in the outer lane but are signalling and “asking” at matching speed to be let in early in the queue. We all get out of position sometimes and need a little goodwill from fellow motorists.

Best to remember that an accident may be someone else fault, but it’s still your accident!

If we all stayed in lane, matched the other lanes speed, and pulled in (and allowed others to pull in) when it was safe to do so, traffic would merge without all the pushing and shoving from selfish people in BOTH lanes. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
