Humming rear end - My roof rack is a tuning fork

Had a humming which only started at 50mph and sounded like the rear passenger side wheel or tyre, as it is an odd make (not my choice). Decided to live with it after the rear diff horrors and bearing issues.

On a separate piece of modding I added the standard roof bars for a freelander 2 and hey presto no more noise, who’d of figured. Rolling with laughter

A photo would be handy so the rest of us can avoid this issue. The slightest change in the wrong spot or the wrong profile can cause horrible noise. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

That used to be a common fault many years ago when using those cheap, gutter mounted aluminium roof racks. At certain speeds it gave a noise like you were being followed by an prop driven aeroplane that sounded exactly like a wheel bearing. I had a similar thing a few weeks ago on a mates car. A fiesta he used for teaching pupils. Turned out it was the triangular magnetic roof sign that was giving the noise. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Tie down ratchet straps will resonate in the wind, put half a twist in the strap & it stops making noise. Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!

Yup I removed my cross bars last week to give them a clean
and was surprised just how loud the rails were.
Taking the lot of soon which should add to the Karma. Very Happy

Last time I had a humming rear end was over 60 years ago after being slippered for some misdemeaner. Had POLNUD as a light bruise for a few days. Parents today would prosecute the school for assault. Shocked MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

The Extra bars added, the basic rack was on the car when I bought it, so here is the quiet version

The only noise I have had was from the front left cast metal bracket fitting into the extrusion. On corrugated roads it rattled. A bit on packing with high abrasion engine bay electrical tape fixed the problem.

I've never had any whistling noise from the LR roof rails or cross bars & I've got 4 of them & made numerous modifications to them.

The middle support only has a screw holding the roof rails together so I replaced that with a bolt: https://www.freel2.com/forum/topic31435.html Procrastination, mankind's greatest labour saving device!
