1 hour to charge is what bugs me, I normally stop for 30 minutes tops. You've just got to hope that the charger is available and its working.

I'm heading out to Applecross in a weeks time, not much charging stations on that route. The Velar will do that on a tank. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

Very Happy but not really - telling a few men with a red flags that they were now unemployed was a lot easier than it will be sorting out the EV charging needs of the country. Jules

No way could I contemplate a fishing trip to the river Thurso - 650 miles door to door and then in the wilds of Caithness. As has been said - until they can guarantee c 300 mile per charge and rapid charging points everywhere (by that I mean less than 1/2hour) it will only be popular with short haul commuters and inner city motorists.

Perhaps Dyson with his new facility near Malmesbury and massive research budget will come up with a solution. MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

thing is Tenet, you have hit the nail on the head by saying ''only be popular with short haul commuters and inner city motorists.''

The government and by default the car companies aren't interested in the long haul commuters or long distance holiday drivers. If they can reduce emissions in London, followed by all other major cities, then they can feel good about themselves and tick the relevant box on their CV.

I like going on holiday to Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, but I couldn't make it in one go in an EV. Im quite capable of driving the 300 miles in 1 stint (if im feeling fresh all the way) in my FL2 and still have fuel for the first couple of days holiday. I couldn't even get close to that in EV.

Not much hope with Dyson, bought a V8, battery died just after the warranty period of 2 years, had less than 20 mins on full power, the importer out here wants a fortune for a new battery with only a 2 year life span, Dyson not interested despite it being a UK bought unit.
Batteries will never replace fossil fuels for every day use unless some one finds two new rare metals that can take a huge charge and hold it for 300 miles and recharge in 30mins. Best solution is a lease battery system with standard batteries that you unplug wheel out and replace with an exchange unit, recharging is OK for city and towns whilst you work or do a big shop/ night out my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Before I retired, My company purchased 3 Transit vans converted to full EV by Smiths electric vehicles. 2 panel vans for breakdown duties and a flatbed for the stores deliveries.

The exiting diesel flatbed did two runs a day to our 13 workshops in South and East London and out as far as Bexley Heath. When the EV took over they had to reduce this to one run a day and the driver had to have his extended lunch break at Bexley Heath garage to allow the truck be charged to complete the return journey to Camberwell where it was based. As far as I know EV commercials are still of limited use as was ours in this case back then in 2012. 2007 TD4 XS The work horse that earns its up keep

Whilst there is no doubt going full EV will have huge health benefits for city dwellers the global benefits are less certain to my mind:
The mining and transportation of raw materials - not nice if you live near one

I think that may be a copper mine in Russia but huge lithium mines of the future would look similar I guess.

If renewable sources fail to meet the huge extra electricity demand required by EVs, we will then continue to rely on fossil fuels for electricity generation and that in turn could conceivably increase CO2 production above that associated with ICE use due to increased inefficiencies in energy conversion (due to Entropy Im told). Jules

Sums it up very well, once the majority are catered for, then "the rest" will end up inconvenienced as "dirty" ICE vehicles will get forced off the road - taxed, legislated, or by dwindling fuel station availability.

Would you wantthe cost of installing or maintaining underground fuel tanks and fuel dispensing pumps for a rapidly diminishing market? Tried to get lead replacement petrol lately? Tangiers Orange - gone, missing her

Plug-in hybrids seem to be the most popular and affordable - Just try and buy a Golf GTE...

"Due to unprecedented demand, leading to long delivery lead times, Golf GTE is currently closed to ordering."

I must admit I like the idea of driving to the local shops and back on full electric and using the ICE for longer journeys or if you run the battery down - best of both worlds. Jules

PHEV are the most popular (or sold) mainly because of the company car tax advantages and they are cheaper due to having a MUCH smaller battery than a full EV alternative. Regards

I know, let's all buy electric cars then pollution will drop as we will all be stuck in house waiting for the charging van, meanwhile in the real world most countries are still spewing out millions of tons of Censored .

Inner cities perhaps ,anywhere else no and that's not being anti climate change just facts as it's yet another brainwave by the boffins before anything is ready.

I'd heard it was popular as there were very generous discounts being offered for buying them. No one gave a toss about their 'saving the planet' credibility, it was all down to saving the wallet.
