Seems they think the 110 will look like the New Discovery should have, i.e. with a properly designed rear half.

Also some of the tyre choices seem a bit extreme for cross country use.

This weeks Autocar has said the new Defender is being sold as 'Mild (48v) Hybrid, and
PHEV (Plug-in) versions.

More intriguing, it says that the PHEV's rear axle will have an electrically pwered rear axle. It is quoted as saying that fears that this will compromise off road are misplaced.

This will mean that maximum torque can never be transmitted to either axle, which I suggest is a weakness in extreme conditions. (say towing a boat up an uneven slipway)

The PHEV will do 35 miles (claimed) in pure EV mode.

The amount of torque produced by an electric motor is considerably more than that produced by an ICE. in most 4x4 each axle will take a upto 50/50 torque so no real problem. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

Not sure about the myth of infinite torque from electric motor as input current has to be limited on start up.
Also electric motor drive systems very rarely have multiple gears, while a normal I.C.E. has gears (and torque converter) to multiply up the amount of torque available, and must 4x4 can direct most of the available torque to wheel with grip, via clever braking of slipping wheels and full connection to all 4 wheels.

This clip shows an Outlander PHEV stuck because the back axle has grip, but insufficient power (torque) to pull the car and boat forward. The nose-weight of the trailer just makes the problem worse by reducing the front axle grip.



I am sure the original Defender would easiy cope with this tricky situation, by transfering it's torque to the rear axle. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)

Ian, if you think about it you can't brake the slipping wheels as if if were both front or both rear the car won't go anywhere, should the car be either normally front or rear drive then you can transfer all the torque to the normal wheels, however once the non normally driven wheels come into play then the torque is split upto 50/50.
Though the torque of an electric motor would need to be limited on start up, the limitation is for the current, you will still get the maximum available torque ( which is limited due to wiring and battery capability) a series motor will have maximum torque available from power being applied, therefore no need for gearing apart from the designed gear so as not to draw excessive current at start up, and achieve the designed top speed. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis
