Canada 2013 LR2 2.0T HSE Auto Firenze Red
LSD thoughts?

So, I was wondering; What are your thoughts on equipping the Quaife LSD on the LR2?
I can't seem to find any threads on this.

Also, I can't seem to find any discussion on this: Do you fit the LSD on the front axle and on the read?

I can't for the life of me see any advantage to having this fitted, even if it could be. You need wheel slip to allow the Haldex and 4WD system to operate correctly, i.e. Provide power to the wheel(s) that need it the most. A LSD on a 4WD Haldex setup would simply confuse and override that, and render it in effect a normal car.

I should imagine that the LSD on the FL1 was intended based on the V6 petrol engine and VCU setup, as opposed the more modern Haldex system found in the FL2.

Very good thinking. As the notion of 'slip' is Front/Rear based... what about Left/Right?

I really need to see a technical brief on Haldex to think about this clearly. Anyone have one?

I agree with Southam, the FL2 relies on an electronic program work it's traction control. Any extra mechanical control will just confuse it, unless of course you reprogram it to include your new mechanical set up.

PS After living through the 1960 / 70s I wondered what your LSD Thoughts were? FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
FL2 Metropolis SD4 Auto 2014 2017- (16k - 77k+ miles) (MY2015)
Metro in its 11th Year of (Extended) LR Warranty / Full LR Service History
(Expensive, but Trouble/Worry free - hopefully?)

No, I don't (yet). A Saab forum would probably yield that information though?

Freelander aside, the new Evoque (L551) has moved the game on further. On the rear axle, at each wheel is an all-new electronic Haldex-type clutch. Front PTU keeps the prop constantly turning, individual rear clutches engage where necessary once slippage is detected. It's a seamless system, and given the punishment I gave it recently, works very well.

I guess it's just design evolving continuously.

its always a bit scary looking when you see a modern electronically controlled AWD wheel spinning its front wheels until the systems reach their threshold and engage the rear wheels fully, but it works.

its not as smooth looking as the old Defenders/D2 kind of set up with low ratio boxes that just grip no matter what and claw their way out of almost anything.

I would guess If you wanted to fit an LSD to to FL2 it might be better to take the electronics out the equation as much as possible if it can be done.

That's interesting. So that's two Haldexes to worry about? 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
5 x FL2 4 manual + 1 auto

My understanding is that it isn't a Haldex system anymore, but something that they have developed themselves. It works on the same principle as the Borg-Warner setup though.

When you are off-road in it, viewing the 4x4i screen allows you to see which rear wet-clutch is engaging instantly by way of a graphic. I highly recommend you try a test drive in one - it knocks spots of the DS and would be my choice of replacement if the Freelander dies in the not too distant.

it was called active driveline in the latest Evoques and was an optional extra on most models IIRC

both rear wheels have an electronically controlled clutch and can be locked individually according to what all 4 wheels sensors detect (ABS, DSC, TC etc etc) effectively giving you rear and centre diff lock.

I could be wrong but I think this is what defender and discovery 1/2 drivers used to achieve with after market air lockers on the diffs.

I can't help but feel that it's all going the wrong way and getting too complex (like the wading depth indicators I saw on one model) with even more to go wrong. Still I guess that the guy who is responsible for buying all of the Toyota pickup trucks for the Taliban and ISIS isn't in JLR's preferred market sector. Laughing 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto
