Blown head gasket....i6

Oh well, that’s it then......been standing for six weeks, started up this morning no problem after first getting in through the passenger (manual entry) of course......sat in until it had warmed up all fine.....fans kicked in so let it tick over for another ten minutes while I went get the battery charger and extension lead...came back to a missfiring, spitting water from the exhaust and steam from under the hood monster...... Censored ! No more than ten minutes at temp and it’s thrown a wibbly wobbly.

TBH I reckon it’ll not be worth repairing after this lockdown.......looks like I might have a few grand of scrap on the drive now. Regards

David

Dave,

That's terrible news.

The Head-gasket on the SI6 is not a common failure point.

Since it's been sitting for 6 weeks I wouldn't assume that some water coming out of the exhaust is coolant.

I am going to tell you what most likely happened.

Note: if this turns out to be true then you got very lucky

1. Thermostat failed or coolant hose failed
-->a. Thermostat
-->b. Large three way hose with gray connector
-->c. Hose for heater-core failed

2. Engine got very hot

3. One or more coil packs failed due to age and high temperature

4. The failed coil pack may have blown a fuse also

5. You know what happened next

There are other possibilities but these are less likely

(i.e. coolant to oil heat exchanger failure)

Check the codes and see which cylinder was misfiring.

Then remove and inspect that coil pack.

Don't write it off yet.

I own two 3.2's with 0 head gasket failures.

And both of my 3.2's have suffered all of the common failures seen by others.

Good Luck

Paul

Nooooo! I am with @p_gill here.............hoping it's not the head gasket! I really like the straight 6 and to my knowledge, head gasket issues are very uncommon on these Volvo engines.

My sympathies.... if that does turn out to be a wrecked engine, you have a tough choice - just over a year ago ours (2009 2.2 TD HSE) dropped a valve and wrecked the engine, so I had to choose between scrapping/breaking the car or engine transplant - the financial loss either way would have been similar, so I went engine transplant on the basis that I knew the car (we’ve had it seven years now) and otherwise the car was fine, having had new tyres, brake discs and pads literally a week earlier, and a recent rear-end repair at someone else’s expense - plus I’m happy to put another 100K miles on this one anyway.

However, I can’t tell you how many times I had second thoughts and changed my mind before finally getting the work started a week or two after... so I wish you good luck on it! Lexus RX450H - 500 mile a week commuter- I just couldn’t trust in a newer RRS or DS for that….
2009 Freelander 2 HSE... 155K miles, we’ve done 135k of those, has done brilliantly on the commute and staying firmly put as car two in the household
2002 Jaguar XK8 Coupe... fun, fast, ours for 12 years and owes us nothing - so staying with us too…

Thanks all for the support, and suggestions......from years of crap cars.....pretty sure the symptoms looked exactly like and sounded like a popped head gasket, these was a nasty grinding sound when switching off which lasted a few seconds and I suspect it was a cooling fan partly seized which could have easily caused the overheating and consequently the head......

Anyhoo for now I haven’t had the balls to go out and investigate further, it’s on SORN presently and TBH it was a second/stand by car so as farmers say.....first loss, least loss. Regards

David

Is it not worth replacing the head gasket?
Perhaps garage labour bills would make it not financially viable, would you tackle it yourself?
I did the head gasket on my Td5 D2 (twice!) not really difficult, just a bit of a pain, second time much easier and wish Id used a top quality head gasket first time round. Thumbs Up Landrover - turning owners into mechanics since 1948

I'm with Bob on this. If its a second car and time is not a problem give it a go.
Its much easier working at a leisurely pace. If it starts to do your head in just down tools and go back to it later.
You will always find some help on here as well.

Nothing tried nothing gained. Thumbs Up Now at the point when I learn something new something old is lost out the other side !
Now retired so it doesn't matter anymore.
Freelander now gone.

Had I been ten years younger I would have tackled the job in my sleep, and loved it but now I suffer from a medical condition which stops me handling things with any kind of finesse or control very easily, let alone the fact I am/was waiting for a pair of knees which means I find standing for more than 5 minutes a completely pain.

It takes me two hands to guide a screw into a hole on flat pack furniture, it is totally frustrating.

No, I will not be tackling this myself at all, in my younger days I would (and did) change a head gasket at the roadside where it broke down, but now......nah.

I’ll have to wait until after the/our lockdown (both very vulnerable) and try and get it up to our local greasy spanner man, who luckily likes Land Rovers.....we’ll see. Regards

David

Would have changed to my summer tyres by now but the right knee is holding me up. To heck with it, I am changing my tyres this weekend. Slow and steady......... Bow down
