Oh well, that’s it then......been standing for six weeks, started up this morning no problem after first getting in through the passenger (manual entry) of course......sat in until it had warmed up all fine.....fans kicked in so let it tick over for another ten minutes while I went get the battery charger and extension lead...came back to a missfiring, spitting water from the exhaust and steam from under the hood monster...... |

Nooooo! I am with @p_gill here.............hoping it's not the head gasket! I really like the straight 6 and to my knowledge, head gasket issues are very uncommon on these Volvo engines. |

My sympathies.... if that does turn out to be a wrecked engine, you have a tough choice - just over a year ago ours (2009 2.2 TD HSE) dropped a valve and wrecked the engine, so I had to choose between scrapping/breaking the car or engine transplant - the financial loss either way would have been similar, so I went engine transplant on the basis that I knew the car (we’ve had it seven years now) and otherwise the car was fine, having had new tyres, brake discs and pads literally a week earlier, and a recent rear-end repair at someone else’s expense - plus I’m happy to put another 100K miles on this one anyway.

Thanks all for the support, and suggestions......from years of crap cars.....pretty sure the symptoms looked exactly like and sounded like a popped head gasket, these was a nasty grinding sound when switching off which lasted a few seconds and I suspect it was a cooling fan partly seized which could have easily caused the overheating and consequently the head......

Is it not worth replacing the head gasket?

I'm with Bob on this. If its a second car and time is not a problem give it a go.

Had I been ten years younger I would have tackled the job in my sleep, and loved it but now I suffer from a medical condition which stops me handling things with any kind of finesse or control very easily, let alone the fact I am/was waiting for a pair of knees which means I find standing for more than 5 minutes a completely pain.
