Continental CrossContacts were due for renewal after nearly 40K miles having given excellent service and positive ride on deliberately downsized 19" to 17" on my SD4 HSE. After much research, decided to invest in allweather tyres and went for Pirrelli Scorpion at a reasonable £115 each, bought via Asda, fitted by Formula One. This included a FREE alignment check, which showed up that works were required to which I agreed at £90. I received the old and new tracking diagrams.
So I have four brand new tyres with fresh alignment, inflated correctly at 32psi; and I feel every white line, manhole cover, change in camber, change in surface. If I drive over a dead critter, I can tell which sex it is!
So my questions are;
1) Is this the character of Pirelli tyres?
2) Is this a character of allweather tyres?
3) Is it possible the technician misread the tracking machines, or are they idiot proof?
4) Can anyone recommend an independent tracking company?

It is important that the fitter used a dedicated 4 Wheel drive alignment machine, rather than an ordinary one. Not many places offer 4 wheel drive alignment, as the equipment is hideously expensive in the first place. So check that your alignment check was done properly with the correct equipment in the first instance.

Just out of curiosity did the continentals show any alignment issues before you had the adjustments done ?

Pirelli ATR on 17 inch wheels on my vehicle.

They don't perform at all as you are reporting.

Which Scorpions are you using?

90 quid seems awfully cheap for a 4WD alignment. MY11 SD4 SE Auto

Pirelli Scorpion ATR too , 17” wheels runs like it’s on rails , and zero skitter .

Just as an aside , I hit a pothole in the Scooby and took it to the dealer for 4 wheel alignment . The main dealer cost was £85 and took over an hour and half , as a rod end had to be heated up . It is on new Bridgestone All season Tyresc and and it now drives perfectly . There is an independent tracking shop near here and computerised 4 wheel alignment is £65

ATS offer computerised 4 wheel alignment nationwide , I think that’s around £65 as well .

Just a thought , all season tyres ( I think ) tend to be directional due to the water clearing and snow sipe design . The Bridgestone A005 certainly are . Across 2 Volvo XC's I ran the Pirelli Scorpian Verde All Seasons on 17* and 18" rims for about 30K miles. This was in London, on the motorway, A& B roads and farm lanes and tracks in all weather including last years beasts. I never had any isuue with them and in comparison I have no issues with the Continentals on the Freelander either: both seem excellent tyres.

There are different versions of the Pirelli Scorpian Vrdes, only the all season have the sipes (question mark on my spelling) and edge square block pattern.

Thanks for your replies. I have googled a search for "Four wheel DRIVE alignment/tracking" and can only get results for "Four wheel alignment", which Formula One does indeed have.
Can you confirm that we are talking about "four wheel DRIVE tracking"? and if so can you recommend a nationwide company?

I'm talking about four wheel alignment
I used a local indy who had Bosch equipment and training
My local tyre fitter put me on to the garage I used - he was absolutely adamant I went to a specialist and not just try pot luck said he had seen too many horror stories

Tramlining and inconsistent steering I have experienced over the years in various cars has been caused by,

Running tyres with stiffer sidewalls, early days cross plies, then very low profile wide tyres,
and/or
Worn wheel bearings, track rods, or bushes, causing toe in / toe out under load.

Both of which did not show up during wheel alignment or balancing.

Try and find a garage that has the Hunter wheel alignment system, it is the best in the business, BMW, Mercedes and I even think JLR themselves use Hunter at main dealers. I've used all sorts of alignment kits and its by far the best and most accurate. Very rare a wheel is off centre.
