I was having a look at a MY2013 HSE Lux today as a possible upgrade to my current HSE, and I need to pick a few brains.

Does the Electric Hand Brake automatically release when you move off or do you need to manually release it - I ask because this feature is new to me as my MY2011 has an old fashioned manual hand brake.

Yes the hand brake automatically releases when pulling away. MY13 HSE LUX Aintree Green

You can release it manually too.

The other things worth noting about the EHB is that it uses the rear disk brakes and does not require a separate braking system like manual hand brake. To replace the rear disk pads you need to set the EHB into service mode which is done electronically, using ignition switch, accelerator peddle and EHB switch. Jules

As a matter of interest how do they test the hand brake (electric type) on the MOT?

it will release when you drive away but....... best too do it manually (quick press) otherwise you get an annoying chime & warning!!

it is, by far, one of the best features. So simple!

No chime or Warning on mine except first drive off on a journey then only sometimes not every-time. Yet another case of the FL2 computer doing its own thing.

More modern cars with a EHB can be set to apply once you stop anywhere like a T junction and when flipping cars between family members it is far too easy to think the HB is on when it is not. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

According to the DVSA the correct MOT procedure is:-

The Land Rover range are brake tested using a decelerometer. Unlike most vehicles fitted with an electronic parking brake, the parking brake is also tested using a decelerometer. Before this part of the test, the vehicle has to be put into ‘bedding’ mode, otherwise the service brake will apply as vehicles ECU it will think it is an emergency situation.
 
Getting the vehicle into ‘bedding’ mode is detailed on our vehicle technical data within the MOT Testing Service.
 
The procedure is:
 
* Bring vehicle to rest on level ground using foot brake
* Apply the EPB
* Fully apply brake pedal three times and hold on third application (this must be within 10 seconds)
* Whilst maintaining pressure on the foot brake pull the EPB switch (located in centre console) four times in a row and then press three times in a row (this must be within 20 seconds)
* Mode selection will be indicated on the instrument panel by a flashing red light and a mode selection message. “.……”

Eeeeeeh the fun you can have with these cars

The EHB is great when it co-operates - forget your seatbelt or have a door or tailgate open and the computer has convulsions

Service mode to release the brake for pads etc is easy to do - plenty of posts on here No Longer the owner of a 2013MY Fuji White GS

"Fiat Lux" a philosophy not a car

If my brakes have been on (EHB or Footbrake) and the car is on a slope, I cannot use the trickle forward, and the car can move a bit sudden, as I apply some accelerator.

I find it a bit tricky when trying to manoeuvre in confined spaces on any kind of incline. Otherwise the 'Hill Hold' feature is very good on the open road. FL2 XS SD4 Auto 2010 2012-2017 (21k - 91k miles) (MY2011)
