Rear diff.

So got my fl2 serviced today and the garage have said I need a new rear diff it’s leaking oil and needs replacing.

But i’ve seen no oil on my drive, I don’t notice any noise coming from the rear, and no warning lights. They are a good I dependent Land Rover garage, so know what they are talking about.

They are talking just under 1100 inc fitting for a rear diff assembly, reasonable costs or who do you recommend. I have sent an email to bell engineering asking how much for them to do it, anyone else got their diff changed in East Midlands and if so who did it for you. 2010 Freelander2 TD4_e GS

Where's it leaking then? Upwards? Laughing

You wouldn't get any warning lights on the diff.

Bell Engineering charge ~700 fitted IIRC.

Have you checked the diff oil level?

I recommend you change garages.

I would want to be sure that it is not simply the output shaft seal(s)! These are known to go, and one of mine is leaking slightly and soon to be replaced, but I am certainly not planning on replacing the whole diff at this stage! 2005 D3 2.7 Auto

Leaks are caused by seal failures and if it was serous it would show on the ground. You would change a seal not a whole unit.

So how much oil did they top it up with (and charge you for) as it was being serviced ?

Go to Bell. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

You could try Infield 4x4 over at Newbold Coleorton which is not far from you.

They used to fit Bell Engineering diffs so worth a ring. I have used them in the past for a couple of faults and they are a nice bunch of lads and very reasonable.

Seconded... my supposedly knackered diff bearing became a knackered n/s rear wheel bearing when Austen drove the car... saved me quite a bit in repair costs as, had I have had the diff done (needlessly as it turned out) I'd have still needed the wheel bearing doing. Sadly, Austen doesn't do wheel bearings.

If I ever need a diff replaced, my car will go to Bell Engineering without hesitation.

If it's any consolation, I am currently without car as it's having a rear of engine seal replaced at £1,250 !

Well had it done at Bell, he said yep it was leaking and needed doing. He also said it looks like it's already been replaced once before.

So job done didn't really notice it being quieter to be honest but it's done. 2010 Freelander2 TD4_e GS
