Any coating directly on to rust is at a disadvantage as, if the covered rust comes off it takes the coating with it. It then leaves an opening where water can nestle between the coating and the metal which can accelerate the rust.

I'm not saying it is better just to leave it as the coating must help prior to being compromised.

If not going for the full eradication of rust I have found Trustan to be a reasonable treatment prior to painting as it does seem to convert and bind the rust to a degree.

If there is rust under the coating it will continue to be rust and will expand if it gets access to water.

Noting all of the above Hammerite smooth is a great quick coating which will stick to, and cover, almost anything. I use it a lot when the look of the final finish isn't paramount.

Thanks. I'm planning on shoot blasting the worst off as I have a handheld shoot blaster then applying the paint. I've just not used hammerite straight to rust before and I was wondering if it was worth getting some or just get some rust treatment then normal paint. Lee

There are lots of rust converters out there I've had good results with Kurust and Bilt Hamber.

What/where are you painting? If the underside/chassis etc not really seen, then probably Hammerite smooth after treatment is as good as most conventional paint and easier to apply as you can often get away with one coat if careful. It can be awkward to achieve a good finish though. Once hard (and it takes ages to fully set) it can be quite brittle though so can be prone to chipping as it often forms quite a thick coating.

For a chassis you don't see there are no doubt better coatings which are more flexible and resistant to chipping.

The only stuff I have come across that works is Kurust, it converts the oxide into a black compound and then you paint over it. 3 x FL1 2 manual + 1 auto

I wouldn't paint any exposed upper bodywork with Hammerite. It really needs to be cleaned back a sprayed properly if it isn't going to look a state.

Anything covered by trim etc. should be good.

And, with apologies, I don't know where I got Trustan from, I meant Kurust. Embarassed

I had the inner wings off when I was checking over for its mot this weekend it's not bad on the front but both back wheel arches will need doing as soon as possible.
