I did that run a few years ago and passed at least 4 hopelessly stuck cars. They already had people helping them and I wasn't game to stop because if I lost momentum I would have sunk down to the floor pan. The rescue guy out of Robe charges around $300 to pull you out and gets plenty of business.

No, we had enough of the 40°C heat & giant mosquitoes, & looked for a bit cooler weather. Headed to Deep Creek NP, then north along the coast.

Took the Freelander from Beachport to Robe via Nora Creina on the weekend (South East South Australia). Lots of soft sand, sand dunes to tackle and plenty of rocky areas to really test the suspension. 7 cars in the group, 6 were 4wd utes, 2 Toyota Hilux's, 2 Mitsubishi Tritons, a Ford Ranger & a Suzuki Vitara with lift kit, plus my FL2. Pleased to say the FL2 performed superbly. 18"Continental Cross tyres reduced to 15psi was the only real testing point. Ran over a heavy duty rocky section and had a tyre de-bead slightly, a quick inflation and thankfully it reseated and we were on our way in minute. In sand mode, DSC off and using manual mode (thanks for the tips Mikehzz & Lightwater) made easy work of even the softest sand and sand dunes on & off the beach. The FL2 gained a few fans on the weekend, particularly from the 'real 4wd' owners who each got bogged in the soft sand.

Thanks for the photos Carel. The terrain looks very similar to what I experienced. Like you, I found the Freelander made light work of the soft sand & dunes.

Look in the towing section - I posted a write-up where the Freelander towed my caravan through some deep sand. They are extremely capable!

Great photos. We lived in rural Victoria in the 1980's when our kids were still at school, we toured/camped much of the Ocean Road plus inland. Really pleased to see from your photos that virtually nothing has changed the views since then - long may that remain.

Your planning authorities could teach many of our districts in the UK how important it is to keep environmentally sensitive areas just that, otherwise our grandchildren will have to rely on photos to see natural UK without 'development'.

A lot has changes since the 1980's. I drove around the coast from Adelaide to the Victorian boarder back then & there was either nothing, or an odd shack, or the coastal town which was so small if you blinked you would miss it & drive past.

Now there are too many tourists and too much development for the various local environments. We have had no overall long term planning by government. The only reason why the areas look ok is that we have a lot more land to mess up, & our photos have been very selective!

New development with plenty of room for expansion. There was nothing when I was last here!

Great Ocean Road 12 Apostles part of the car park, coaches & the many helicopters not visible. Probably worse than Stone Henge which I saw in 2010. There were about 500 tourists from China & India, 10% were other & locals. For example shops in Apollo Bay are designed for the non local tourists ferried in in the continuous stream of coaches! A bit like the Amalfi Coast but without the heritage, quality coffee or nice food!
