Strange behaviour from my MacBook

I did a recent software update and iTunes update on my MacBook so perhaps a corrupted file was the cause here? Basically I tried to start it up today but the progress bar was very slow and eventually resulted in the below message. Several restarts via clicking the button or forced restarts did nothing.

Eventually I chose to reboot via the startup disk menu at the top of the picture shown below (menu appears once connected to WiFi) and chose the MacBook drive as the startup disk (only option available) and it started up just fine! Now it’s up and running I’m doing a time machine backup just in case.

Any thoughts or similar experiences?
