We have a 2011 HSE Freelander 2 diesel automatic.

It's been running great for the past 2 years but in the last few months it has had random starting problems. When I push the button to start it either does nothing or there is a small clunk noise. Usually after a few pushes it finally engages and the engine starts. Lately this has been happening more and more to the stage my wife wasn't able to get it started for the school run. After coming home she was able to start it.

It has a new battery and the dealer doesn't seem to think it is the starter when I left it in for 2 days (I'm unsure if they did any tests on it). They have ordered a new button for the dashboard in case it is the contacts behind this. I was wondering if this was the problem would there still be a clunk/clicking noise (you know the sound you get when your starter packs in)?

Would a starter present with intermittent starting problems like this?

Although we have it scheduled to get the button replaced I feel we should just go ahead and get the starter done also as it is not that expensive and the cost of recovery if broken down somewhere would end up matching the cost of a replacement starter with labour (£280).

Any suggestions?

Older cars benefit have an extra earth lead, lots of chatter via the search button above to include dimensions etc. A new solenoid pack fitted to starter is low money and known fault again use search and you can get the key fobs serviced by a guy on here. Later cars just change the the internal fob battery on each for about £1.50p. FL2 MY10 TD4 GS traded in at 2 years

I had the start button replaced which didn't make any difference.

Finally I left it in for a new starter and it's been 2 days with no start problems.

New starter motor fixed my intermittent starting problem
